Trails utah is an organization dedicated trails advocacy, planning, funding and building in needed areas throughout utah.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 28

Grit mill climbing trails - in 2015 trails utah entered into a unique partnership with the salt lake climbers alliance(slca), and the forest service to help create a trail system to serve climbers seeking better access to one of the states most celebrated climbing areas. For decades climbers have had to scramble up steep slopes and bushwhack through dense stands of gamble oak and maple to reach the bottom of their climbing routes. Trails up to the crags and throughout the area that access boulders also popular with climbers, were numerous, steep, and heavily impacting the areas vegetation. A main loop and spur trail is now established and provides excellent hiking and viewing of the little cottonwood canyons spectacular scenery. Work continues on access trails taking climbers to the base of their climbs and on leveling those base areas to create belay pads where climbers can safely sit and belay their partners on the climbs above.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 29

Dog lake to desolation lake trail reroute - this project was identified as high priority by the salt lake ranger district of the uinta-wasatch-cache national forest and trails utah. The existing trail between the two lakes in this popular hiking area extended down a drainage and was too steep. This project created a new connection along an alignment that is enjoyable to hike and bike and works to mitigate erosional forces.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 30

Ensign peak trail plan development - trails utah teamed up with salt lake city parks and public lands staff to engage community members and work to develop a trails plan for the popular ensign peak area. Existing trails are extremely steep, highly eroded, and user-created trails have proliferated in all directions. This plan identified the most sustainable alignment for a trail up to the top of ensign peak as well as trails that wrapped around the north side and connected to the bonneville shoreline trail above ensign peak. These trails can serve hikers and bikers as well those looking for alternative transportation options to and from work in downtown salt lake city and help to protect the foothills natural area.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 31

Zoo to u - the foothill trails renovation plan, or zoo to u, has been a multi-year effort to bring stakeholders and landowners together to address the heavy use and lack of management going on in the foothills of salt lake city behind the university of utah and the medical campus. Trails utah developed a proposal to improve the bonneville shoreline trail(bst)that runs through the area, so that it might serve as an alternative transportation route, and expand secondary trails above the bst. Together these improvements can create a world class trail system that could host hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, dog walkers and eliminate much of the user-created spider trails impacting the foothills natural area.
