Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The GRYD Foundation believes that no one should have to bury a loved one due to gang violence, and that no one should be left behind or limited based on zip code. Established in 2012, our mission is to create a safer, stronger, healthier Los Angeles that we can all enjoy and be proud to call home. Thru an innovative partnership with the City of Los Angeles Mayor's Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development and our comprehensive program model, we create platforms for positive community engagement with law enforcement via meaningful sports, arts, educational and recreational activities, while also creating job opportunities and providing linkages to community based resources in 32 neighborhoods across Los Angeles. We do this primarily via the Summer Night Lights ("SNL") program. Entering its tenth summer of implementation, the SNL program has a long standing history of reducing violence in and around SNL sites while engaging youth and adults in positive, meaningful activities

The GRYD Foundation works to increase community resilience to the influences of gangs, poverty and unemployment.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

The Form 990 was prepared by an independent CPA firm, reviewed by management, and then emailed to the board members for their review before it was filed with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

Annually, key persons review the conflict of interest policy and complete a conflict of interest disclosure. The conflict of interest policy is monitored on an annual basis by the Board of Directors. If a conflict exists, after a presentation by the interested person at the board meeting, he or she must leave the meeting during the discussion of, and the vote on, the transaction or arrangement involving the conflict of interest. After exercising due diligence, the board shall by a majority vote of disinterested directors determine whether the transaction or arrangement is in the organization's best interest and for its own benefit and whether the transaction is fair and reasonable to the organization, and shall make its decision as to whether to enter into the transaction or arrangement in conformity with such determination. The minutes shall document all of the above in detail, including names of persons involved and disinterested persons who were present for discussions and votes relating to the transaction or arrangement.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

Executive Compensation is approved by the Board of Directors based on comparability data. Documenation of the process and decision regarding compensation is documented in the Minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

GRYD will furnish a copy of these forms upon request.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C:

The organization's Board assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of its independent accountant. This process has not changed since the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination. Interest and penalties, if any, are included in expenses in the statements of activities. As of December 31, 2015 and 2014, the Foundation had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the financial statements.

IRS990/Desc0The GRYD Foundation has continue to partner with the City of Los Angeles Mayor's Office of Gang Reduction & Youth Development (GRYD) and The Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles to bring the Summer Night Lights (SNL) program to 32 communities across the City of Los Angeles. Part of the GRYD comprehensive strategy, SNL seeks to use community engagement, gang prevention/intervention and violence interruption methods to help communities become resilience to the influence of gangs. In 2015, we continued to serve communities by offering free activities and services such as: sports leagues/clinics, health services, free meals, arts and crafts, zumba classes among other resources. In addition, in an effort to continue serving communities in need year around, aspects of SNL were offered at select sites on Fridays from late September through mid November. The Fall Friday Nights (FFN) program also partnered with different agencies such as: LAFD, the Red Cross, City Attorney's Office, local colleges and universities to offer workshops, skills based training, and linkages to resources for youth, young adults and their families. Moreover, The GRYD Foundation launched the Youth Squad 360 initiative (YS360). Through YS360, fifty (50) Youth Squad alumni will receive a needs assessment, customized service plan and case management. Service options include skills based workshops; vocational, career and college readiness; connections to mental health services; assistance accessing benefits; and mentoring. The intent is to provide 360 degree wrap around service to help SNL youth squad alumni succeed at home, school, work and life.In 2015, SNL witnessed the following: 723,507 program participants across 32 sites21,990 community members participated in an SNL art workshop9,642 sports league participants7,574 Zumba participants503 participants received HIV/STI testing452,192 meals servedIn 2015, Fall Friday Nights witnessed the following:15,325 program participants across 8 sites3,480 community members participated in an SNL art workshop479 fitness/dance class participants94 participants attended healthy relationships / domestic violence awareness workshops77 participants attended disaster preparedness workshops208 participants attended emergency preparedness and CPR workshops13,357 meals servedNote: we scaled back our efforts with Technical Assistance, Tattoo Removal and Gun Buy Back so we can focus on strengthening the nonprofit and expanding our work with the teenagers and young adults we currently serve thru Summer Night Lights and Youth Squad 360 (building on the progress they have made during the Summer and Fall.)

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination. Interest and penalties, if any, are included in expenses in the statements of activities. As of December 31, 2015 and 2014, the Foundation had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the financial statements.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Form 990 was prepared by an independent CPA firm, reviewed by management, and then emailed to the board members for their review before it was filed with the IRS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Annually, key persons review the conflict of interest policy and complete a conflict of interest disclosure.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Executive Compensation is approved by the Board of Directors based on comparability data. Documenation of the process and decision regarding compensation is documented in the Minutes.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3GRYD will furnish a copy of these forms upon request.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4The organization's Board assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of its independent accountant. This process has not changed since the prior year.
