“OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Leadership and Community Development====================================Core to our mission: Mentoring a deep bench of local leaders. How: Local leadership is more important than ever, as the country grapples with the daunting challenges of a tenuous democracy and humanitarian crises. Identifying and investing in leaders from mobile and ethnic minority communities is essential, to ensure their voices are heard and their rights protected. Our Leadership Fund expressly initiated to develop a new generation of leaders has already aided 800 people in advocacy, campaigning, journalism, social media messaging, and organizational management. We support them to build the knowledge, skills, confidence, and networks they need. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Migration, Displacement, and Emergency Responses================================================Were helping displaced communities find a place and a voice.How: We are witnessing growing crises in Myanmar and along its borders. As people are forced or move away from their home communities across borders or into urban slums, they become ever more vulnerable. Their very numbers are formidable: more than 720,000 recent Rohingya refugees, an unknown number of internally displaced people in Rakhine State and another 679,000+ in other parts of the country, 103,000+ refugees in camps along the Thailand-Myanmar border, and millions of unregistered migrants who have fled political and economic conflict. They struggle to access basic services, shelter, and protection from exploitation.Partners Asia supports these communities in their efforts to organize around basic needs, such as life-saving food, shelter, and water for refugees and IDPs, and access to education and health care. We also help them advocate for their legal status, including helping to procure ID cards, work permits, passports, and birth certificates. Using Participatory Action Research, theyre able to document the issues within their own communities, analyze the realities they face, and devise strategies with government and other stakeholders for change.Education=========Migrant children and those who live in rural areas or city slums often have limited access to education; we want them in school and for their schooling to count. How: Access to a basic education is not assured for many children in the communities we reach. We support non-formal schools in refugee settlements, city slums, monasteries, and even in plantations all to help prevent children from getting lost amid the ethnic tensions and displacements. Beyond the classrooms, we back efforts to standardize accreditation so that children who study in non-formal schools can have their education recognized in both Thailand and Myanmar. Keeping children in school deters human trafficking, labor exploitation, early marriage, and the cycle of poverty.”
