Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of sam academy is to provide opportunities for underserved children in science,art and music. The program supports a free science workshop open after school and on saturday. Children can become involved in making/science ctivites. Other programs include art and music programs for at risk/under served children in the sanger area .

SAM Academy provides opportunities in STEM education and Positive Youth Development for under-served children in the Central Valley of California. SAM Academy partners with local and national organizations to expand support in these areas and to also provide professional development for local schools colleges and parents in STEM and making.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Measure S Positive Youth Development Positive Youth Development programming that leads youth away from those risk-taking factors that could lead to joining a gang. The program builds upon and extends the unique SAM Academy curriculum pedagogy and project-based approach to engage kids youth and adults with scientific discourse research and projects that promote critical thinking applied problem solving skills and engineering habits of mind for the purpose of demystifying computer science coding and robotics activities. High school students serve as interns to support the program for younger youth. Offered for free in the Sanger Community Science Workshop parents drop off students in a place supported by trained staff high school interns college interns and becomes a high quality after school program that improves school success establish a science and engineering identity and be a safe place to be. This year 25 high school students and 150 youth per year are served.$0$84,000
STEM programs to large numbers of students in both in-school and after-school settings Popular projects are offered students who then take home the project they complete. The STEM program is offered during summer school summer camp and after school venues. Schools often come on field trips to the facility which is room by room full of bins and boxes of wood plastics cardboard and a large variety of materials are available for project-based learning experiences. Tools adorn the walls hanging on pegboard and are also stored in rolling tool chests. Scissors pencils pens rulers glues and assorted paper are always available. This year program was reduced due to COVID but approximately 2,000 students were served.$0$65,000
Community Music Studio: The SAM Academy 'Making Music' program supports underserved youth from Sanger and surrounding communities to learn music and explore their talents through classical methods in piano guitar drums percussion violin and or voice. Many children coming to our program do not have instruments to practice at home or even resources to participate in music lessons. We often lend out instruments and help support the purchase of their own once they form a dedication to the instrument. More than 60 students currently participate with a growing wait list for more.$0$48,500
