Mission and Program Overview

Mission

USING THE POWER OF FLIGHT TO CHANGE LIVES: The Bob Hoover Academy creates opportunities that inspire at-risk and underserved teens to get engaged in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) education and to take flight in aviation. Aviation is a metaphor for the deeper mission, to capture students minds, focus their energies and to cultivate success in the classroom and in life. Each student earns admission into our flight training program by excelling in our ground training curriculum. From there, the ultimate transformative experience is to leave the instructor on the ground, take an airplane into their own hands and fly solo. Students become accountable to themselves and their teammates, challenging themselves in order to participate in an endeavor that can have a measurable impact on their future; ultimately, they develop the skills and confidence to launch themselves out of their current orbit towards a course as a dynamic and contributing member of society.Dati

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
In 2017 the non-profit began with a name change from Every Kid Can Fly (EKCF) to the Bob Hoover Academy (BHA). It was also the second year of our public/private partnership with the Monterey County Office of Education (MCOE). The alternative education program that we solely served during 2017 is a full-time, diploma-earning classroom with a maximum of 18 students. MCOE has named this class the "SAFE Transportation Pathway". The partnership agreement allows BHA to interact with the students during their school day. This happened in 2017 through weekly ground school, individual flight instruction, and periodic field trips. The student population in the SAFE classroom is semi-transient - which means they come and go throughout the year due to the following factors:50% are expelled from their original high school district,30% are on probation, and others are interdistrict Transfers. 95% of the students qualify for Free/Reduced lunch, which is a federal label of poverty. Among other labels/categories assigned our students:50% are either foster or homeless,40% are English Language Learners (ELL},and for 60% English is their second language. The mission of the Bob Hoover Academy is to serve this student population - the ones who need inspiration the most Our primary goals to inspire them to graduate from high school with their diploma. 2017 HighlightsJanuary - Name change to Bob Hoover AcademyMarch - Orientation Meeting for parents and studentsApril - Implementation of Flight Levels,Applications, and Interview ProcessMay - Community Aviation Foundation New York trip for 3 students - 3 Graduates, with an average of 42 hours of flight time eachJune/July - Summer School sessionAugust - SAFE class begins piloting the AOPA high school curriculumSeptember - Open House for community, donors & students - PBS station filmed and produced segment on BHA! - http://www.pbs.org/video/bob-hoover-academy-pcuonn/October - Martin soloed!November - SAFE teacher attended the AOPA Symposium in TexasDecember - Redbird Flight Simulations donated a Redbird FMX - full motion flight simulator!$55,530-
