“1.breakout fellowships term endowment (temporarily restricted contributions) - terence tao, richard taylor, and jacob lurie, recipients of the inaugural breakthrough prizes in mathematics, very generously created the breakout fellowship to promys. The breakout fellowship is a full scholarship to promys for a mathematically talented student who might not otherwise be able to attend. With the goal of creating a fully funded breakout fellowship to promys endowment, the promys alum community was invited in december 2014 to match the very generous donation of the breakthrough mathematicians. Thanks to the generosity and vision of all the donors, this endowment goal was reached in march 2015. The future of the breakout fellowships to promys is now assured: there will be a breakout fellow in every promys cohort. The promys foundation announced that the 3rd breakout fellowship to promys was awarded to haneul shin of river edge, new jersey, in may 2017. In may 2018, the 2018 breakout fellowship, the 4th year of the fellowship, was awarded to william cowen-breen of massachusetts. 2. The trustee scholarships are full scholarships to promys awarded by the promys foundation thanks to the generosity of the promys alum community. 3. Partial support (stipend, room and board) for counselors at promys 2017. There is one undergraduate counselor for every 3 or 4 students. Counselors grade the work of their assigned students on the daily number theory problem sets, supervise the students' research projects, act as mathematical guides and role models, attend advanced seminars, and engage in their own mathematical research which they share with the whole promys community. The talented multi-tiered mathematical community is a distinguishing feature of promys. In addition, funding supported honoraria for the nine research mentors who supported research projects for returning students at promys 2017. 4. The tara and jasubhai mehta fellowships to promys are for mathematically talented low-income students in india and are funded by nicholas nash, the indira foundation and morph.org, the mehta fellowship sponsors. Each mehta fellowship covers all tuition and room and board costs for attending the six weeks of promys at boston university. The fellowships also cover round-trip airfare from india and the cost of any required books. There were eight mehta fellows at promys 2017: three first-year mehta fellows and five returning mehta fellows. 5. Promys for teachers (pft): there were 15 first-year teachers and 5 returning teachers at promys for teachers 2017. Supporting their collaborative work in number theory, seminars and research were 12 teacher counselors plus faculty including the pft research director. During the school year, promys teachers are invited to attend five full-day workshops offered jointly by education development center (edc) in waltham and boston university's department of mathematics. These seminars are designed to help teachers "unpack" the pedagogical approaches used in promys to enrich the mathematical experience in their own classrooms. Another important goal of the workshops is to establish an ongoing network of teachers, mathematics educators, and research mathematicians. Typical agenda items include: 1) teacher volunteers share experiences, activities, and student work from their classrooms, 2) the whole group works together on mathematics inspired by topics in the secondary curriculum, and 3) teachers collaboratively plan lessons, working in the style of japanese lesson study groups. 6. Thanks to the generosity and vision of a family foundation, the yongren fellowships to promys were established in 2017 to enable mathematically talented low-income students in china to participate in promys at no cost to their families. The fellowships cover all expenses including visa application fees and round-trip travel from china. The inaugural yongren fellow in 2017 was zehong zong from zhengzhou. The foundation is delighted to report that t”
“The breakout fellowships term endowment fund will be used to provide full scholarship to promys for a mathematically talented student who might not otherwise be able to attend.”
“The foundation is exempt from federal and state income taxes under internal revenue code 501(c)(3), except to the extent that it has taxable income from businesses that are not related to its exempt purpose. Unrelated business income that greater than $1,000 would be taxed at the applicable corporate tax rate. The foundation did not have any unrelated business income during the year ended december 31, 2017, accordingly, no provision for income taxes has been made in the financial statements. The foundation is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Federal and taxing authorities no longer have the right to examine tax years prior to 2014. For the year ended december 31, 2017, there were no interest or penalties associated with tax positions recorded in the accompanying financial statements.”

THE FOUNDATION IS DELIGHTED TO REPORT THAT T |
