| NEIGHBORS UNITEDMany renters in Long Beach face unhealthy and unsafe living conditions in their hoes, yet when they try to make a report and get things fixed, their landlords retaliate with a rent increase or eviction. Housing Long Beach works with low-income residents who are impacted by these issues to bring the reality of substandard housing and slumlords to the surface. The Resident Outreach Committee leads the work by talking with renters and neighbors and helping them make their voices heard through collecting surveys, conducting home visits with city leaders to see the conditions, speaking to the media and finding many ways to uplift these untold stories. The Committee and organization are also working alongside LB City leaders to implement changes to the existing code enforcement program so that it will work more effectively for renters by protecting them from retaliation, keeping slumlords accountable, and improving the health and safety of Long Beach residents. | $69,273 | - |
| Housing Element CampaignHousing Long Beach is working to bring community voices into the public process of shaping the Citys Housing Element, an 8-year State-mandated plan that will become the Citys road map to meet the housing needs in the Long Beach. The HLB Steering Committee, comprised of residents and allies, has developed a simple community-based platform of four priorities to impact the passage of the Housing Element. This platform includes: a mixed income housing ordinance (wherein a percentage of all new development is affordable); a permanent local source of funds for affordable housing; creation of a rent trust account which allows tenants living in substandard conditions to pay their rent to the City until conditions are fixed, holding landlords accountable and improving the existing stock of housing; identification of sites for affordable housing in quality and safe neighborhoods that have access to transit and other community resources. HLB is building its diverse community base to participate in the Housing Element process by developing new resident leadership through neighborhood organizing committees in the most impacted areas of the city (West, Central and North Long Beach). We have specific outreach to our unique Cambodian community (the largest outside of Cambodia), Latino and African-American communities and are creating opportunities for leadership development for engagement in the campaign through civic engagement activities, i.e. trainings, legislative visits, policy hearings, community meetings, etc.The Housing Element campaign is an ongoing program and will continue to be a part of HLBs programs as we work to implement the programs and policies secured within the HE. | $51,954 | - |
| Leadership TrainingsHLB offers ongoing trainings on leadership skills and community organizing. Trainings are primarily held at HLBs monthly community meetings and the all-day semi-annual Leadership Summit, as well as ongoing development activities that occur in personalized 1-1s between staff and resdients. Participants receive training in basic community organizing, public speaking, Government 101, understanding race and power, and general tools on how to engage their communities. | $25,977 | - |
| Voter EngagementIn the summer of 2012, local community organizing efforts got together to develop a strategy to increase civic and voter engagement and increase voter turnout amongst low-income, low-propensity voters of color. HLB is working with a coalition of 15 organizations to engage voters around ongoing issue work to increase affordable and quality housing, ensure inclusive and supportive education, defend living wage jobs, and protect a clean and healthy environment. The efforts will focus on converting voters to Vote-by-Mail status, holding forums and educational events to equip voters with the knowledge needed to cast their vote, and to mobilize voters come election days to get to the polls. This work is building HLBs long-term capacity by increasing the resident base and making our influence more tangible to build public will and ultimately lead to a more just Long Beach. | $17,318 | - |
| Language Access ProgramHLB worked with partner organizations and resident leaders to promote greater access to interpretation and translation services in the City. HLB worked to gather grassroots data and held community forums for residents to tell their stories of not having access to appropriate translation services. The City Council voted to adopt a comprehensive language access policy in August 2013. This campaign/program is still underway as the coalition continues to meet and discuss implementation strategies. | $8,659 | - |
