Profile

Measures for Justice (the Organization) is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to create a first-of-its-kind monitoring method for local criminal justice systems that will gauge how well or poorly they are performing on an ongoing basis. (Continued on Schedule O) Eventually, the Measures for Justice will become a nationwide system that will gather data from most, if not all, counties across the United States. The Measures for Justice will consist of a bundle of measures that will create a picture of the US criminal justice system that no single data point can provide. The Organization uses these data and corresponding analyses to identify leading practices and to enable county officials to learn from each other. In short, better data will create better systems, which in turn will create better results.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 8B

There are no other committees with authority to act on behalf of the governing body.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

The Form 990 is reviewed and approved by the President/Executive Director working with the outside accountants. A complete copy is then sent to the full board for review. Any feedback is considered by the President/Executive Director and bookkeepers who jointly make the final decision before filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The Organization provides each officer and director with the conflict of interest policy when they are elected or appointed. The policy is also reviewed annually. If a potential conflict with any officer or director arises, the Organization follows the conflict of interest policy and documents that process in the meeting minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The Organization follows a consistent process to ensure equity in its hiring procedures. Each candidate goes through three rounds of interviews and completes a work product exercise so that the Organization can further evaluate the candidate's skills. Lastly, interviews with references are conducted to further evaluate the candidate. Depending on the level of the position, the process also includes members of the Board and the outside advisory groups interviewing candidates. All salaries are benchmarked to the market. The Board reviews and approves the Executive Director/CEO, the Chief of Strategy & Operations, the Chief Product Officer, and the VP of People & Internal Operations salaries annually. It is the policy of Measures for Justice to provide equal employment opportunity (EEO) to all persons regardless of age, color, national origin, citizenship status, physical or mental disability, race, religion, creed, gender, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, genetic information, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law. In addition, Measures for Justice will provide reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The Organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon request.

IRS990/Desc0Measures for Justice Institute (the Organization) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to make accurate criminal justice data available to spur reform. Problem: Criminal justice happens primarily at the local level, across 3,000+ U.S. counties. As a result: criminal justice data is incredibly hard to get, incredibly hard to understand, and incredibly hard to use. This is one of the main reasons it's so hard for communities to rally for change or make informed decisions about what has to be done. (Continued on Schedule O)Solution: A world in which the criminal justice system is fully transparent, accessible, and accountable. To get there, Measures for Justice helps make criminal justice data: - easier to get, - easier to understand, - easier to use.Measures for Justice does this by providing data tools and services that help communities drive the change they want to see. Some of these include: Commons - a platform that allows the public, police, prosecutors, courts to work together to make criminal justice performance data available as the basis for informed decision-making. As part of this process, Commons provides communities with a unique opportunity to set and track criminal justice policy goals.Data Portal - one of the largest bodies of standardized, accurate, and coherent county-level criminal justice data in the country. The Portal allows users to compare the performance of counties within and across states across a series of measures from arrest to post-conviction. The Portal includes a growing number of states, counties and 45 million criminal justice cases - which allows users to generate full county reports and state overviews. Data Assessment Tools - tools that help agencies gauge and improve the quality of their data in preparation for greater transparency.Consulting - We work with agencies/offices/courts to help them improve how they collect and standardize their data based on a series of best practices and model legislation.Research - We conduct original research on data trends and policies to help stakeholders make smart choicesThis program is funded by contributions.
