Additional Explanations

Form 990,part III, Line 4,continued

Education & Distribution (Continued):The Representation Project has also set for itself the goal of inspiring youth to be agents of change in their communities thru our Be A Rep Program and the establishment of our Youth Advisory Council. In 2016, the organization hosted approximately 130 semi-theatrical screenings and facilitated over 650 educational screenings for the film The Mask You Live In in 20 countries and all 50 states. The organization also hosted approximately 50 semi-theatrical screenings and facilitated over 50 educational screenings of the film Miss Representation.Social Action Campaigns (Continued): The Representation Project creates and disseminates its messages through education and online communications, mainstream publications, media appearances, speaking engagements, viral videos, and social media campaigns. The organization activates people to pledge to use their voices to spread the messages of the films and challenge the medias limiting portrayal of gender. Campaigns provide people with the tools to use their voice and consumer power to challenge and dramatically change the way gender roles are portrayed in advertising, media, and mainstream culture. For example, our #AskHerMore campaign inspires consumers to call out sexist reporting and suggest ways to refocus on womens achievements. In 2016, #AskHerMore conquered the red carpet, transforming the questions asking and even getting discussed in the Oscars opening monologue. The Representation Project then took the campaign to sports and politics, successfully inspiring journalists to change their language when it comes to covering prominent women in sexist way. To advance the conversation around healthy masculinity, we took to the streets for Super Bowl 50 with the #BeAModelMan campaign, projecting healthy masculinity messages on buildings throughout the city. We spoke with our San Francisco neighbors, NFL executives, owners, and coaches about creating a culture where positive role models can thrive on and off the football field. To ensure the campaign went beyond our local community, we created a short video about #BeAModelMan, which garnered more than 100,000 views.FILM:The third film, tentatively titled The Great American Lie/Dream, explores the social, political, legal, and economic ramifications of a cultural value system built on extreme masculine ideals of power, dominance, and aggression at the expense of empathy, care, and collaboration.

PART IX: STATEMENT OF FUNCTIONAL EXPENSES

24a - Film Expenses include a portion of employee salaries devoted to film production activities, which are excluded from Line 7.

Schedule L, Part IV, Line 1

Relationship: Jennifer Siebel Newsom is the President & CEO of The Representation Project. Girls Club Entertainment LLC (GCE), a single member LLC, is owned by Jennifer Siebel Newsom. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Education & Distribution: The Representation Project educates and inspires all people, especially the next generation of youth, with the messages of its films and raises their conscience around the harmful effects of mainstream media. The Representation Projects curriculum is used in thousands of classrooms, non-profits, and communities around the country. The curriculum is comprehensive with age appropriate film clips and modules for K-5 grade, middle school, high school and university levels. It provides resources to help youth, parents, educators, and counselors talk with each other about how to overcome the medias negative messaging. (SEE SCHEDULE O)

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Film: In 2016, The Representation Project continued production on our third film to continue the conversation started by our first documentary Miss Representation in 2011 and then continued with the documentary The Mask You Live In. Miss Representation exposes how the media and our culture at larges limiting portrayal of women and girls contributes to their underrepresentation in positions of power and influence. The Mask You Live in follows a diverse group of boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating Americas narrow definition of masculinity.
