Hope for Humans exists to provide dignity, comfort, safety and hope to children afflicted with Nodding Syndrome and their families. We are creating a future where these innocent victims can receive the lifelong medical care and support they need to live a dignified life. Children and families are visited regularly where we conduct medical assessments, administer treatment, and monitor progress and adherence to medication. We also monitor class performance to children who are school going. - Income Generating Activities (IGAs) at both the center and in the surrounding communities. IGA activities include: piggery, poultry, vegetable farming and agricultural production. This is to ensure sustainable food production and income generation from sales of the farm produce.

IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0Hope for Humans was founded in 2007 and provides direct medical care and supportive services to children and families who have been afflicted with Nodding Syndrome, a recent, little-known yet deadly disease that is attacking the brain and nervous system of children, ages 5-15. The disease is currently restricted to small regions predominantly in South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. In 2012, the organization built its first Care Center located in Odek Sub county of Northern Uganda to provide medical and personal care, special schooling, nutrition, and support services for over 150 children. Hope for Humans is also working hard to raise international awareness of Nodding Syndrome within the scientific and research communities, government and nonprofit sectors. This year, Hope for Humans volunteers and staff are working to establish new grant funding opportunities with the US government and other international agencies to help address this growing medial crisis. The goal is to launch additional medical care centers in Uganda and beyond to properly care for these children and their families. Since its inception, Hope for Humans has always targeted its fundraising efforts to attract a broad base of public support from diverse donors. From 2012 through 2015, however, the organization received substantial financial support from one donor causing the organization to fall below the 1/3rd support test. The reason for this influx in donations from one person was that the doctor was interested in helping address an immediate charitable need to build its medical infrastructure in Uganda to service children and families suffering Nodding Syndrome. The organization continues to receive small donations from diverse donors. This year, the organization has brought on additional leadership and fundraising specialists to help the volunteer board build a broader coalition of public support and funding and seek government grant and other public support opportunities. Hope for Humans is one of the only 501(c)(3) organizations in the US that is working to help children with NS in Uganda through direct medical care and support services. The organization's public support status is critical to helping to continue to raise sufficient funding to address this important charitable need. The board of directors for Hope for Humans is composed of respected medical professionals and social service providers, none of whom are related by family or business connections. The organization's Care Center in Uganda serves a broad and public charitable class, namely the impoverished children and families that are suffering from Nodding Syndrome in Uganda. In addition, the organization is working to raise public awareness of Nodding Syndrome and viable medical responses within the medical community, and currently operates the only known public blog explaining the disease, medical news, and related stories from the Care Center. The organization's leadership is working to advocate for NS children and families at the the National Institute of Health, meeting with local government officials in Uganda to address this growing charitable need, and seeking to develop strategic collaborations with other public charities and NGOs operating in Uganda.
