Mission

The mission of southwest center for independent living dba empower: abilities, is to reduce barriers and empower independnet living for all people with disabilities. This work is carried out through the provision of a full range of independent living services, assistive technology, durable medical equipment, home modifications, and attendant care services, all aimed at maximizing independence. We work to reduce barriers in the community through advocacy and technical assistance to both private and public entities and advocate for the rights and needs of people with disabilities at the local, state, and national level.

The mission of scil is to promote a barrier-free environment for all individuals with disabilities through public education and advocacy for social change.

Southwest center for independent living qualifies as a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and is classified by the internal revenue service as other than a private foundation. The center complies with the provisions of fasb asc 740-10-25. Under this standard, an organization must recognize the tax benefit associated with the tax taken for tax return purposes when it is more likely than not the position will be sustained. The center does not believe there are any material uncertain tax positions and, accordingly, it will not recognize any liability for unrecognized tax benefits. For the year ended june 30, 2018, there were no interest or penalties recorded in its financial statements. The center's forms 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, for the years ending june 30, 2017, 2016 and 2015, are subject to examination by the internal revenue service.
