“The figge's 2023-2024 exhibition highlights included: "edouard duval- carri:endless flight" this exhibition focuses on the multi-faceted nature of haitian identity and culture. Duval-carri's impressive multi-part altarpiece, endless flight, contains dense imagery referencing haitian spirituality, history, and politics. "art and activism at tougaloo college" co-organized by the american federation of the arts and tougaloo college, art and activism at tougaloo college examines the birth and development of this unique collection-the first in mississippi dedicated to modern art. Comprising of approximately 33 artworks in a range of media by artists such as david driskell, elizabeth catlett, alma thomas, pablo picasso, richard mayhew, charles white, and hale woodruff, the exhibition gives insight into a complex american collection established at the intersections of modern art and social justice. "zimoun" a new, space-specific installation by the swiss artist zimoun. The installation includes over 80, 16-foot high cardboard stacks each set in motion mechanically. In addition to the strong visual aspect of numerous moving and jiggling cardboard towers, the movements will create a multitude of sounds and noises for visitors to contemplate. "quanta of space: the bosom sculpture of ibram lassaw" remembered as one of the few pioneering abstract expressionist sculptors, ibram lassaw was less well known for his wearable sculptures, or "bosom sculptures," as he called them. Between 1951 and the late 1990s, lassaw produced over 1,000 pieces of wearable art for family and friends. Created without drawings or plans, this extraordinary array of jewelry included pendants, necklaces, belt buckles, and broaches. "tradition interrupted" tradition interrupted features a fascinating selection of 23 artworks created by 12 artists from around the world who believe that everyday objects have the power to evoke memories and emotions. Their works connect the past and the present by reimagining age-old art into exciting contemporary artworks. "day of the dead: remember, honor, celebrate- not only does day of the dead have strong ties with our hispanic community, it was declared a world heritage day by unesco in 2003, acknowledging the importance and strength of living heritage that is transmitted through community from generation to generation. This installation will explore how we as humans celebrate and remember the lives of our lost loved ones through the collective traditions, art-making, and story-telling that are integral parts of da de los muertos. The 43rd rock island art guild fine arts exhibition the rock island art guild and the figge art museum are proud to present the 43rd rock island art guild fine arts exhibition featuring a selection of 48 artists living within 200 miles of the figge art museum. This exhibition has been organized by the rock island art guild since 1970 and hosted by the figge art museum since 2016. "graphic approaches: printmaking in 1970s europe" printmaking in 1970s europe features more than 35 prints from the museum collection displayed for the first time at the figge. Ranging in subject matter from political to surreal and in style from figuration to abstraction, this varied selection reflects the vibrant contemporary art scene in 1970s europe.”
“The figge art museum (hereinafter "museum") is renowned for its collections (including its stewardship of the city of davenport art collection) of american, haitian, and spanish colonial art. The initial city of davenport art collection was started by charles august ficke and has been significantly expanded by others, including dr. Walter e. Neiswanger. His founding collection of haitian works is one of the most significant in the nation. The museum also features an expanding collection of postwar and contemporary photography as well as an extraordinary recent gift of modern and contemporary american paintings donated by linda and j. Randolph lewis. In summary, the museum collects, preserves, and interprets for the public trust a distinguished collection of art from the 16th century to the present. The museum continues to grow its collection through acquisitions by gift bequest, transfer, or purchase of works that represent its core areas. The artworks the museum seeks to collect reflect important artistic, cultural, historical, social, and political trends, movements, and ideas. These acquisitions provide avenues to explore a wide array of artistic viewpoints and the role of art in our community, serving as a means for continued exploration, scholarship, and discovery in the arts.”
“Income from the permanent endowment is used to fund the art museum's purchase of art objects or for other purposes as set forth by the board.”
