Riverside theatre strengthens the cultural fabric of iowa city through intimate, engaging productions from classics to new works, fostering a deeper appreciation for the dramatic arts. See schedule o for continuation.

Through its roster of educational programs and outreach activities, riverside theatre serves both youth and adults with an education schedule that fosters appreciation for the dramatic arts, teaches theatre skills, builds audiences for live theatre, employs artists, and builds community by offering opportunities to talk about ideas generated by theatre work.the young people's intensive, riverside theatre's summer educational program for serious high school theatre students, teaches contemporary and classic scene work, movement technique, improvisation, and audition technique, along with specialty workshops in voice, text, and stage combat. Ypi also has a public showcase highlighting their working process and featuring an ensemble performance. Other youth classes in 2012/2013 included clowning, improvisation, cold reading technique, solo performance, and a remarkable shakespeare educational outreach program (hamlet in 2013) which reaches more than 1,500 students in area 8th grades, will power. The theatre also offers "by request," classes, workshops, or residencies personally designed for kids, teens, or adults. Riverside theatre encouraged the development of original work through its annual monologue festival, "walking the wire," attracting more than 170 national submissions, and the world premieres of "manning up" and "the exit interview." both premieres were rolling world premieres, a program of the national new play network, of which riverside theatre is a core member. Other productions in the 2012/2013 season included the contemporary american classic "true west" by sam shephard, the david sedaris solo show, "the santaland diaries," and "blackbird," by david harrower. Riverside theatre also completed the third season of its unique mentoring relationship with working group theatre, a young professional company which produces original scripts in residence at riverside theatre. Working group theatre is also afforded rehearsal space, access to costumes and props, and mentoring in areas ranging from administration to bookkeeping to artistic production. In 2012 working group theatre produced "rust," a documentary drama about the auto industry.riverside theatre in the park, the annual outdoor classical repertory, produced "hamlet" and "the school for scandal" in a summer season of 17 performances. In addition to a professional company of actors, designers, and technicians, the apprentice company offered training in acting, directing, stage management, voice/movement, and audition technique to 10 young theatre artists. Outreach components of riverside theatre in the park, which has very strong local funding and in 2011/2012 won a grant from the nea for "the merchant of venice," include advance community presentations and forums, open rehearsals, family nights, a nightly green show prior to each performance, and post-performance talkbacks.nearly 100 actors, designers, technicians, and support staff were employed in this season, along with scores of dedicated volunteers. During its indoor gilbert street season, riverside theatre presented 6 plays, 6 special "final dress" previews for sponsors, plus ongoing pre-show and post-show discussions, providing more than 6,000 audience members with high quality professional theatre. These productions provided employment to artists, technicians, and support staff.
