Through its roster of educational programs, riverside theatre serves both youth and adults with an education schedule that fosters appreciation for the dramatic arts, teaches theatre skills, builds audiences for live theatre, employs artists, and builds community by offering opportunities to talk about ideas generated by theatre work.the young people's company, riverside theatre's cornerstone educational program, is a five-week intensive training program in the classics for high school actors, designers and technicians, which culminates in a full shakespearean production. Other workshops and classes have included camp shakespeare-creative dramatics for ages 5-7, acting for ages 8-12, improvisation and stage combat for ages 10-14, and a remarkable shakespeare educational outreach program for area 8th graders, will power. Riverside theatre also encouraged the development of original work through its monologue festival, "walking the wire," attracting a large range of national submissions. In addition to production support from area businesses and individuals, this work was also supported in part by a grant from the iowa arts council. The riverside theatre shakespeare festival, from its home in iowa city's city park, produced "ah, wilderness" and "the two gentlemen of verona" in repertory in a summer season of 17 performances. In addition to a professional company of actors, designers, and technicians, the intern company offered training in acting, directing, stage management, design, and technical theatre to young theatre artists. Outreach components of the festival, which has very strong local funding, include family nights, post-performance discussions with youth, a nightly green show prior to each performance, and will power, an education program for area junior high students, which reaches many youth through school workshops and performances as well as area-wide poetry and sonnet contests.many actors, designers, technicians, and support staff were employed in the 2010/2011 season, along with scores of dedicated volunteers. During its indoor gilbert street season, riverside theatre presented several plays with multiple peformances, plus ongoing pre-show and post-show discussions, providing audience members with high quality professional theatre. These productions provided employment to artists, technicians, and support staff.
