Activity 2

This category includes a variety of programs and services geared toward the care and education of young children. Parents may also be assisted through these initiatives. Head start/early head start/child development centers/4-year old voluntary preschool upper des moines opportunity (udmo) head start and early head start programs and child development centers served 614 children and their families during the 2010-2011 program year. Head start is funded to serve 344 children and early head start is funded for 176 children. All programs maintained full enrollment throughout the program year. Head start serves many more children in partnerships with school districts in its eight-county service area. Upper des moines opportunity's head start programs are available in buena vista, clay, dickinson, emmet, o'brien, osceola, palo alto, and pocahontas.both programs maintained full enrollment throughout the program year. Of the 383 children served by head start, 74% lived in families with incomes below 100% of poverty, 16% lived in families between 100 and 130% of poverty, 3% lived in families above 130% of poverty. Of the 231 children served by early head start, 87% lived in families with incomes below 100% of poverty and 9% lived in families with incomes between 100% and 130% of poverty. Head start served 17.15% with disabilities. Early head start served 18.75% of children with disabilities. Head start and early head start classrooms were accredited by the national association for the education of young children (naeyc) during the program year.

Activity 3

Community services includes a variety of programs serving eligible participants within udmo's 12-county service area. Eligibility may vary by program.
