Activity 2

Child Education includes a variety of programs and services geared toward the care and education of young children. Parents may also be assisted through these initiatives. Head Start/Early Head Start/Child Development Centers/4-year-old voluntary preschool - Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UDMO) Head Start and Early Head Start programs and Child Development Centers served 646 children and their families during the 2009-2010 program year. Head Start is funded to serve 328 children and Early Head Start is funded for 96 children. During the program year, additional funding was received for Head Start and Early head Start Expansion programs in Buena Vista and Emmet Counties. Those expansion programs served 96 children and their families.Both programs maintained full enrollment throughout the program year. Of the 362 children served by Head Start, only 5% of the families had incomes over 130% of the federal poverty guidelines. All 207 children served by Early Head Start had family incomes under 130% of poverty. Head Start served 12.2% with disabilities. Early Head Start served 11.6% of children with disabilities.Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms were accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) during the program year.Head Start ARRA/Early Head Start ARRA - ARRA dollars were designated at the federal level for cost of living adjustments and teacher quality incentives for Head Start and Early Head Start staff. Fatherhood Initiative (Lifetime Dads) - Lifetime Dads is a fatherhood initiative designed to meet the needs of fathers in UDMO's 12-county service area. The mission of Lifetime Dads is to provide education and support to fathers so they can become lifetime dads. Any expecting father or current father figure of a child ages 0-10 is eligible for Lifetime Dads services. Those served directly by the program during FY10 included 125 fathers (with at least 8 hours of curriculum-based programming), 64 men and 57 women in prenatal classes.

Community Services includes a variety of programs serving eligible participants within UDMO's 12-county service area. Eligibility may vary by program.
