IRS990/Desc0THE GREATER DES MOINES BOTANICAL GARDEN IS BREATHING NEW LIFE AND PURPOSE INTO THE FORMER BOTANICAL CENTER. FOLLOWING YEARS OF MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT THE GLIMMER OF THE FACILITY HAD FADED AND SO HAD THE FOCUS ON PLANTS. ON JANUARY 1, 2013 THE GREATER DES MOINES BOTANICAL GARDEN, A 501(C)(3) ORGANIZATION THAT GREW OUT OF THE FRIENDS OF THE BOTANICAL CENTER, ASSUMED A 75-YEAR LEASE ON THE PROPERTY. ARMED WITH THE NEW MISSION OF EXPLORING, EXPLAINING AND CELEBRATING THE WORLD OF PLANTS, THE GREATER DES MOINES BOTANICAL GARDEN IS CULTIVATING A ROBUST FUTURE AT THE INTERSECTION OF PEOPLE, PLANTS AND ART. STRIVING TO ENGAGE VISITORS WITH HORTICULTURAL EXCELLENCE, THE BOTANICAL GARDEN WILL THRIVE AS A CULTURAL INSTITUTION THAT ADVOCATES FOR THE RELEVANCE OF PLANTS AND GARDENS IN MODERN LIFE. FISCAL YEAR 2014 REPRESENTED THE FIRST FULL YEAR THAT THE GREATER DES MOINES BOTANICAL GARDEN LEAD THE OPERATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT FOR THE FACILITY AND SURROUNDING 14 ACRE PROPERTY. THE YEAR INCLUDED A THREE MONTH CLOSURE TO UPDATE THE FACILITY. DESPITE THE CLOSURE, THE TOTAL NUMBER OF VISITORS TO THE GARDEN INCREASED BY 17% FROM THE PRIOR FISCAL YEAR, WITH A TOTAL NUMBER OF 72,606 VISITORS.
