Activity 2

Educate: common sense media educates parents, teachers, and young people in both formal and informal learning environments. Our k-12 digital literacy and citizenship curriculum, developed in partnership with professor howard gardner at harvard's graduate school of education is the core of our educational program. The curriculum helps students grapple with ethical issues about digital life and learn to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our 24/7 digital world. There are 80 lessons in the full k-12 curriculum, with supporting materials such as student handouts, assessments, 3d classroom videos, family tipsheets, and professional development resources. All these resources are made available for free for download from our website. By the end of 2012, there were over 40,000 schools (increased from 25,000 in 2011) and over 63,000 registered educators across the us (in all 50 states) and over 2,000 schools internationally implementing the program.some of the educational program accomplishments include: launch of our new learning ratings system that helps parents discover the learning potential (core academic and 21st century skills) of consumer digital media apps, games, and websites. A version of learning ratings for teachers began development during 2012 and will beta launch during 2013; successful roll-out of the digital passport interactive for students in grades 3-5, with over 7,000 teachers registering 130,000 young people, and 6,500 "passports" already issued since the august 2012 launch; development of user-friendly toolkits (cyberbullying, e-rate) and new curricular content (gender literacy) that curate the "best of the best" content for streamlined use by teachers and administrators.

Activity 3

Advocate: csm also serves as a widely respected public leadership voice in washington dc and across the country on the key issues concerning families about media and technology. In 2012, our policy focus was on education, kids health and privacy issues. In addition, csm co-chaired the leading education by advancing digital (lead) commission, a private commission working with the fcc and doe to create a blueprint for using technology as a catalyst to transform and improve american education.
