| IRS990/Desc | 0 | The annual Spring Showcase scheduled for the end of May was held over to June and then eventually cancelled as theaters did not reopen. SPB pivoted to a late summer "showing" to bring dancers together and serve our graduating seniors who lost every "right of passage" in spring of 2020. We held a socially-distanced, masked, limited audience (25 per performance) in the unfinished event space within our building. We used work lights and put down a vinyl floor and performed in masks. It became clear by the beginning of October that there would be no chance of holding ticketed, in-person performances of the annual Nutcracker so a filmed, virtual performance was planned for December. Another lockdown occurred in November, so the virtual performance filming was postponed to January 31, 2021. We completed the school year at the end of May with a virtual performance filming of our annual Spring Showcase. The first in-person performance held since December of 2019 was outdoors on the plaza of the Minnesota Science Museum in June 2021. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | Under the pandemic, we quickly realized we would not only be one of the first businesses to close during surges but among the last to re-open. SPB re-opened in June at 25% capacity according to mandate and brought back employees in-person gradually over the summer months as we prepared for fall classes and rehearsals for annual holiday performances. All drop-in classes were converted to pre-registration to meet covid precautions. In August all Adult classes began online. Parent & Me classes for ages 2.5-6 were held outdoors at a park for safety. SPB received a grant for equipment to provide online classes and rehearsals as a strategy to survive the pandemic and continue generating earned income. St. Paul Ballet lost 60% of students due to the frequent closures and risk of virus infection. In February 2021 students began to return very gradually. With the availability of the vaccine there was a marked uptake in in-person attendance by adults. Capacity for SPB was increased to 50% on April 1, 2021 but continued with 6-ft social distancing and mandatory masks. Planning was done for summer and fall 2021 classes at 50% capacity. |

Our neighborhood was filled with artwork painted on boarded up buildings. SPB began a new initiative by hiring an Equity and Development Lead, mentored by a local author and award-winning community bias trainer. SPB began implementing workshops for SPB board, staff, dancers and wider community supporters. SPB began licensing one studio to CAAM Chinese Dance Theater as they gave up their studio space to weather the pandemic downturn. It proved to be an important partnership for both of our organizations. SPB also began renting at greatly reduced rate to several dance organizations who found themselves without a home. In March 2021, mass shootings of Asian-Americans roiled the nation and heightened fear by our friends at CAAM Chinese Dance Theater. Together we organized a discussion with our local city officials, arts organizations within our building and staff. We all agreed the best way to make a community safer was to get to know and watch out for each other by prioritizing personal connections. This new partnership resulted in a joint open house planned for August 2021. |
