Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Project success motivates and inspires young people to dream about the future, helps them take steps to get there and gives them the tools they need to achieve their goals. See schedule o for expanded mission statement.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Goal-setting Workshops; Workshops are held monthly during the school in each English classroom, for every student in every school we serve, led by highly trained Project SUCCESS facilitators - with the endorsement of teachers and administrators - using our proven curriculum specifically designed for the students at each grade level. The closer students get to graduating, the more practical our program becomes. The organization delivered 2,724 goal-setting workshops to more than 10,500 young people in 17 Minneapolis/Saint Paul middle and high schools. The workshops are integrated with the curriculum of English/Language Arts classes. The curriculum guides young people through a variety of unique exercises, experiences and discussion to help them look at teir interests, their strengths, and desires for the future. The organization then works with them to set specific goals and takes particular steps toward these goals. The organization calls this process "dreaming with your eyes open" and 90% of participating students report talking a positive step toward achieving their goals.
Activity 3
Theater Experiences: Project SUCCESS uses professional theater to inspire students, help them look at the real life issues they face, demonstrate they are members of a larger community, and as a springboard for discussion in the classroom workshops and at home. We invite students, and their families, to at least 6 and as many as 12 performances annually at no cost, thanks to our 30 professional Twin Cities partners, who generously donate tickets.Project SUCCESS staff coodinates the entire theater experience for the schools we serve. We mail invitations to each student's household; we take ticket reservations; and we know how to go the extra mile to eliminate barriers to family attendance at performances, including providing free transportation and child-care, and contracting families in their own languages. Through Project SUCCESS, students and their families - many of whom do not have the means to experience the Twin Cities' vibrant arts community - attend diverse theater performances together, enriching their shared family experience and increasing opportunities for interactions, which can lead to more positive family relationships and greater home support for youth - shown to have a positive impact on students achievement. During the 2009-10 school year Project SUCCESS, along with its theater partners, provide the opportunity for students and family members to attend 187 evening and weekend performances at professional Twin Cities theaters.
