Mission

Perpetuate the hope of jesus christ through innovative community development.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Program constructs and rehabilitates rental property and single family homes. Rental property is turned over to property management program once completed. The single family homes are sold to low- to moderate-income households in partnership with the city of lakes community land trust. Contracts for deed are available for homeowners who have been declined a home mortgage due to credit challenges, creating an opportunity for them to affordably own a home and improve their credit. Construction on 18 rental units and 4 single family homes was in progress at the end of 2011. During the year, construction was completed on 12 rental units and 7 single family homes, all of which were sold in 2011. 17 contracts for deed were outstanding at the end of 2011.trainees all construction training is done in partnership with other organizations, including goodwill easter seals and tree trust. The organization provides construction sites as a classroom to teach job skills to youth and adults. Use of trainee labor reduces costs of construction to assist with affordability for homeowners and renters. Urban homeworks used 107 trainees on site in 2011. Volunteers program recruits and facilitates on-site work of individuals, schools, churches and companies that donate time to the organization. Additionally, time is spent with each group teaching them about issues that our lowest-income neighbors are facing and challenge perceptions about urban neighborhoods. Use of volunteer labor significantly reduces the costs of construction, rehabilitation and rental turnover improving the affordability for buyers and renters. 4,368 volunteers assisted with on-site construction or office work in 2011.
Activity 3
Other community development activities not directly related to the rental or real estate development programs, but are in line with the organization's mission. In 2011, these activities included coordinating tornado recovery efforts, supervising volunteers and home repairs in response to the tornado disaster on may 22, 2011 in north minneapolis. In partnership with other neighborhood organizations, the organization coordinated and supervised more than 3,000 volunteers the week after the tornado and 180 volunteers during the following summer. The organization repaired 29 homes damaged by the tornado in 2011.

PARTICIPANTS LIVING IN COMMUNITY WITH HOUSEMATES IN URBAN HOMEWORKS RENTAL HOUSING, VOLUNTEER WITH LOCAL NON-PROFITS AND MEET MONTHLY TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE URBAN COMMUNITY. 65 URBAN NEIGHBORS PARTICIPATED IN THE 2010-2011 PROGRAM.
