Mission and Program Overview

Mission

See schedule o.christians for biblical equality (cbe), www.cbeinternational.org, is a 501c3 nonprofit organization comprised of individuals, churches, colleges, seminaries, and organizations, representing more than 100 different denominations in 214 countries and territories. Cbe advances the biblical foundation for the equal dignity, authority, and leadership of males and females in church, home, and society. Cbe's events, publications, website, bookstore, local chapters, and partnerships educate global communities on the bible's call for all christians, male and female, to develop and exercise their god-given gifts for leadership and service with equal authority and responsibility and with the full support of their faith communities. Research shows that when a culture equally values and extends equal authority and opportunities to males and females, these communities experience lower incidents of female abuse and are more economically viable.

See schedule o.cbe exists to promote the biblical message that god calls women and men of all cultures, races and classes to share authority equally in service and leadership in the home, church and world. Cbe's mission is to eliminate the power imbalance between men and women resulting from theological patriarchy.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

Cbe's church and organization membership program is designed for churches, seminaries, schools, and other organizations committed to biblical gender equality and who support cbe's statement of faith and core values. Members receive publications, books, opportunities to host cbe speakers, and discounted conference registrations.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The board of directors receives the completed 990 by email before it is filed. The organization's president/ceo reviews the form 990, and the organization's treasurer reviews form 990 and discusses it with the preparer, privately. The treasurer brings information from their private discussion with the preparer to the board meeting when the 990 and preparer's findings are discussed with and approved by the audit committee and full board. The 990 is then signed by the organization's president/ceo and is filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Annually, all officers and directors disclose interests that could give rise to conflicts using form 402.1 in board manual. All employees review conflict of interest policy during annual performance review. All employee conflicts of interest noted during employee annual reviews are disclosed by cbe's ceo at annual board meetings. Transactions with related parties may be undertaken only if all of the following are observed: a material transaction is fully disclosed in the audited financial statements of the organization; the director, officer, or employee with a relationship with the related party is excluded from the discussion and approval of such transactions; a competitive bid or comparable valuation exists; and the organization's board has acted upon and demonstrated that the transaction is in the best interest of the organization.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

Cbe's president/ceo undergoes a yearly performance review via an independent review by cbe's chair. This process is outlined in cbe's board manual section 208. The board chair discusses their findings with the full board at the spring board meeting and any salary adjustments are determined at this time. The board holds executive sessions without the ceo each board meeting as a policy.

The organization's audit committee, comprised of the board's executive committee, reviews the financial statements. The audit committee is also responsible for selecting the independent auditor at the fall board meeting. This process is outlined in the board manual section 601.1.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization has a tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. The organization has adopted accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, asc 740-10. The organization's policy is to evaluate uncertain tax positions, at least annually, for the potential for income tax exposure from unrelated business income or from loss of nonprofit status. The organization continues to operate consistent with its original exemption application and each year take the necessary actions to maintain its exempt status. The organization has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under the internal revenue code and charitable contributions to the organization by donors are tax deductible. In compliance with their exempt status, the organization annually file a return of organization exempt from income tax (form 990).

CONFERENCE LECTURES ARE AVAILABLE ON CBE'S WEBSITE, AND YOUTUBE AND SOUNDCLOUD CHANNELS.PARTNERING AND COLLABORATING WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS IS ESSENTIAL IN CBE'S WORK. AT THE EVANGELICAL THEOLOGICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETINGS, CBE PARTICIPATES IN THEOLOGICAL DISCUSSIONS TO SHOW THAT WHEN SCRIPTURE IS PROPERLY INTERPRETED, IT TEACHES THAT WOMEN AND MEN WERE CREATED TO SERVE AND LEAD AS MUTUAL PARTNERS.OUR WORK WORLDWIDE IS MADE POSSIBLE BY A DEVOTED, TALENTED TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS, WRITERS, SCHOLARS, STAFF, INTERNS, BOARD MEMBERS, AND DONORS WHO ARE THE HANDS AND FEET OF JESUS, LEADING CHAPTERS, SERVING ON PRAYER TEAMS, CREATING RESOURCES, AND CREATING NEW BOOKS AND BETTER BIBLE TRANSLATIONS. IRS990/MissionDesc0SEE SCHEDULE O.CHRISTIANS FOR BIBLICAL EQUALITY (CBE), WWW.CBEINTERNATIONAL.ORG, IS A 501C3 NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION COMPRISED OF INDIVIDUALS, CHURCHES, COLLEGES, SEMINARIES, AND ORGANIZATIONS, REPRESENTING MORE THAN 100 DIFFERENT DENOMINATIONS IN 214 COUNTRIES AND TERRITORIES.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0SEE SCHEDULE O.BRINGING VOICES TOGETHER TO CONSIDER EGALITARIAN ISSUES AT CBE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES -AT CBE'S 2023 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN BRAZIL, WE WERE ABLE TO INTRODUCE BIBLICAL EGALITARIAN THOUGHT INTO A CHURCH CULTURE THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST PATRIARCHAL IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. THE CONFERENCE IGNITED MANY CONVERSATIONS ON WOMEN'S BIBLICAL EQUALITY IN CHURCHES AND HOMES AFTER THOMAS NELSON BRASIL TRANSLATED AND DISTRIBUTED CBE BOOKS "SIDE BY SIDE AND "PARTNERS IN MARRIAGE AND MINISTRY" COUNTRY-WIDE. CBE ALSO GAVE THESE BOOKS TO EVERY CONFERENCE ATTENDEE. ONE SEMINARY EXPRESSED INTEREST IN ADAPTING THEIR STATEMENT ON WOMEN AND CHURCH MINISTRY TO REFLECT CBE'S MISSION STATEMENT; A BRAZILIAN SPEAKER PUBLISHED A BOOK ON HER LECTURE; AND A CBE WHATSAPP GROUP WAS CREATED WITH OVER THIRTY WOMEN AND MEN WHO CONTINUE TO MEET AND WORK TOWARD THE GOAL OF PARTNERING WITH CBE IN BRAZIL. TO GROW EGALITARIAN MOMENTUM IN SOUTH AMERICA, EGALITARIANS FROM BRAZIL PLAN TO ATTEND CBE'S 2025 CONFERENCE IN ARGENTINA. PREPARING WOMEN TO LEAD -CBE AWARDED THREE $3,000 ALVERA MICKELSEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS TO JOCELYN MOORE (MA IN THEOLOGICAL STUDIES, PALMER THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY), MALORRI SEAMON (MA IN THEOLOGICAL STUDIES, NAZARENE THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY), AND NICOLE KELLY VICKEY (MDIV, DUKE DIVINITY SCHOOL). AS HAS BEEN PROVEN IN THE PAST, AS THESE WOMEN BECOME EDUCATORS, PASTORS, NONPROFIT WORKERS, THEOLOGIANS, AND MINISTERS, THEY WILL HAVE A PROFOUND IMPACT IN THEIR CHURCHES AND COMMUNITIES FOR WOMEN'S BIBLICAL EQUALITY. THEIR PRESENCE ALONE AND USE OF THEIR EDUCATION AND SPIRITUAL GIFTS WILL HELP DISMANTLE PATRIARCHAL BIAS AND SHAPE THE NEXT GENERATION.THE ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS HELP WOMEN PURSUING MASTER'S DEGREES IN MINISTRY FIELDS RELATED TO PREACHING, COMMUNICATIONS, WRITING, YOUTH MINISTRY, PASTORING, OR NONPROFIT WORK. SEE WINNERS AND WATCH VIDEOS OF HOW THESE SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE BEEN A GAME-CHANGER FOR WOMEN STUDENTS AT CBE.TODAY/AMMSSTORIES.ADVANCING BIBLICAL EQUALITY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA -CBE HAS BEEN WORKING WITH COURTSHIP & MARRIAGE FOUNDATION (COMAFO) (ZIMBABWE), IFAGE (KENYA), AND SHELEARNS (UGANDA) SINCE 2013. OUR JOINT MISSION IS TO EDUCATE AND EQUIP CHRISTIANS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA WITH RESOURCES ABOUT WOMEN'S BIBLICAL EQUALITY. THESE PARTNERS CONDUCT WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES WITH YOUTH, MARRIED COUPLES, AND OTHER COMMUNITY LEADERS TO TEAR DOWN PATRIARCHY THAT HAS BEEN CAUSING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE, CHILD MARRIAGES, AND OTHER INJUSTICES SUFFERED BY WOMEN AND THEIR COMMUNITIES.FOR EXAMPLE, AT A PASTOR TRAINING IN BUGIRI, UGANDA, PARTICIPANTS USED CBE'S BOOK, "STILL SIDE BY SIDE" TO DISCUSS PROMINENT BIBLE VERSES IN GROUPS, WHICH INCREASED THEIR ABILITY TO ADDRESS THESE TEXTS. MOST OF THE PASTORS HAVE NEVER BEEN TO SEMINARY OR A THEOLOGICAL SCHOOL. INSTEAD, THEY ARE LEARNING ON THE JOB WITH LIMITED READING RESOURCES. ONE PASTOR SAID, "I HAVE FINALLY BEEN ENLIGHTENED ON EPHESIANS 5:21-22." THEN HE STARTED TALKING TO HIS WIFE, ALSO IN ATTENDANCE, ABOUT KEY POINTS IN THE PRESENTATION. AT ANOTHER TRAINING IN UGANDA, THE LEADER OF SCRIPTURE FOR KABOONG'S SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL PROMISED TO CONTINUE WITH GROUP DISCUSSIONS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND SCRIPTURE THAT SUPPORTS SHARED AUTHORITY BETWEEN WOMEN AND MEN USING THE "STILL SIDE BY SIDE" BOOKLETS. HE CONFESSED HE "LEARNED A LOT AND PROMISED TO FIGHT FOR GIRLS' RIGHTS AT SCHOOL AND IN THE COMMUNITY."AWARD-WINNING PROJECTS -CBE IS COMPLIANT WITH THE EVANGELICAL COUNCIL OF FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY, EARNING A 100 PERCENT FOUR-STAR RATING FROM CHARITY NAVIGATOR, A TRANSPARENCY CERTIFICATE FROM EXCELLENCE IN GIVING, AND A PLATINUM TRANSPARENCY AWARD FROM GUIDESTAR.
