The Organization's activities are generally exempt from federal and state income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Since the Organization is exempt from federal and state income tax liability, no provision is made for current or deferred income tax expense. The Organization is not a private foundation. Management has determined that the Organization is not subject to unrelated business income tax. Management is not aware of any transactions that would impact the Organization's tax-exempt status. The Organization follows the guidance of the Accounting Standard Codification (ASC) 740, Accounting for Income Taxes, related to uncertainties in income taxes, which prescribes a threshold of more likely than not for recognition and derecognition of positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. For the years ended December 31, 2020 and 2019, management of the Organization is not aware of any material uncertain tax positions. All tax-exempt entities are subject to review and audit by federal, state and other applicable agencies. Such agencies may review the taxability of unrelated business income, or the qualification of the tax-exempt entity under the Internal Revenue Code and applicable state statutes. For federal tax purposes, the tax returns remain open for possible examination for a period of three years after the respective filing deadlines of those returns.

IRS990/Desc0Raingarden Installation/Neighborhood Projects program. Our Neighborhood Projects in 2020 included the following projects: - Redesigning Landscapes in Rental Communities - We helped residents create more resilience and better quality of outdoor life in the green spaces of rental communities where many BIPOC folks and recent immigrants live. We work closely with resident project stewards, equitably paid, who help plan activities and encourage other residents to be part of decision making. While the redesigns always include raingardens, native plantings, and other sustainable practices, community priorities shape each landscape. This program included 13 resident project stewards, 15 raingardens installed, and 32 residents hired to work on installs. Sites for this programming included Autumn Ridge in Brooklyn Park, Riverside Plaza in central Minneapolis, and Brook Gardens in Brooklyn Park. - Resilient Landscapes - For residents in Twin Cities neighborhoods, we installed 205 raingardens and native plantings with 9,213 Native plants and shrubs planted, empowering residents to take action to protect clean water and create habitat in their yards. Participants in St. Louis Park and 12 Minneapolis neighborhoods participated in Neighborhood of Raingardens projects. We were part of two projects offering pollinator gardens in communities historically left out of environmental improvement opportunities. We worked with local organizations in Near North Minneapolis and the Corcoran and Phillips neighborhoods to engage residents, including many BIPOC folks and renters, in planting habitat for pollinators. - Metro Blooms also worked on several Commercial and Institutional Projects. We worked with 12 properties, including a brewery, two mosques and a bike shop, to install raingardens, 988 square feet of permeable pavement, a green roof, a 2,861-square-foot bee lawn, and 1,485 square feet of perennial pollinator plantings.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Metro Blooms and Blue Thumb workshops teach attendees about ways to make their yards more resilient to the challenges of climate change and friendlier to the environment. Our workshops covered stormwater management practices (like raingardens!), site planning, native plants, options to traditional lawns, pollinator habitat (including information about the Lawns to Legumes program) and healthy soils. We offered workshops via Zoom for the first time due to the pandemic. In 2020, Metro Blooms hosted 31 workshops attended by 1,919 participants. In a follow-up survey, 89% of respondents planted native plants to protect pollinators, 61% reduced fertilizer and irrigation, and 50% reduced stormwater runoff, a major cause of water pollution. After the Lawns to Legumes (L2L) program was launched by the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) in 2019, 2020 saw Minnesotans across the state planting pollinator-friendly lawns, meadows, pocket gardens, and trees and shrubs as part of this initiative. L2L has received national recognition for pollinator protection and engagement.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Maintenance and Installation. Our design team, most of them graduate landscape architects, take a more sustainable approach to designing landscapes. Our team did almost 300 individual consultations (some of them virtual) and created 16 landscape designs in 2020. For the second year, we had our own crew, seven strong, who were trained in sustainable landcare. They installed 21 new landscape projects. They also inspected and took care of raingardens and other stormwater practices at 28 Minneapolis Public Schools, several affordable housing communities, and a few commercial sites. This helps our clients stay in compliance with stormwater regulations, ensuring they are eligible for stormwater utility credits, while keeping the raingardens working properly and beautiful for all to see!
