| IRS990/Desc | 0 | GENERAL AUDIENCE PROGRAMMING-PARK SQUARE'S MISSION IS TO ENRICH OUR COMMUNITY BY PRODUCING AND PRESENTING EXCEPTIONAL LIVE THEATRE THAT TOUCHES THE HEART, ENGAGES THE MIND AND DELIGHTS THE SPIRIT. NAMED MPLS/ST. PAUL MAGAZINE'S 2012 BEST MID-SIZED THEATRE, WE ARE THE EAST METRO'S TOP EMPLOYER OF LOCAL STAGE TALENT, PUTTING 200+ ARTISTS TO WORK IN 13 PRODUCTIONS. WE ARE ALSO HOME TO ONE OF THE LARGEST TEEN THEATRE AUDIENCES IN THE COUNTRY. OUR DIVERSE PROGRAM SCHEDULE IS SUPPORTED BY THE MARKET'S THIRD LARGEST SUBSCRIBER BASE AND IS MATCHED OR EXCEEDED ONLY BY THE GUTHRIE AND CHILDREN'S THEATRE COMPANY. OUR ADULT AUDIENCE OF MORE THAN 42,000 IS SPREAD EVENLY ACROSS THE GREATER TWIN CITIES AREA INCLUDING WESTERN WISCONSIN. PARK SQUARE THEATRE IS THE PROUD RECIPIENT OF THE SAINT PAUL AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE'S DEUBENER AWARD, NON-PROFIT BUSINESS OF THE YEAR (2016). LIKE MOST MAINSTREAM ARTS AUDIENCES, OURS HAVE BEEN MOSTLY CAUCASIAN, WELL-EDUCATED AND MIDDLE CLASS BUT, THIS YEAR OUR DEMOGRAPHICS HAVE BEEN CHANGING. DIVERSITY HAS EXPLODED WITH 13 PROJECTS ON TWO STAGES, OFTEN CHOSEN AND LED BY WOMEN/AND OR ARTISTS OF COLOR. FOR EXAMPLE, SHOWS THAT FEATURE A DIVERSE CAST LIKE THE 2017 PRODUCTION DOT, ATTRACTED A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF AUDIENCES OF COLOR. IN ADDITION, ARTISTS OF COLOR TOTAL 44% OF ALL ARTISTS THE 2016-2017 SEASON.PARK SQUARE BELIEVES THEATRE IS MOST VITAL WHEN IT EXPLORES THE WHOLE PERSON. WE VALUE EMOTIONAL RANGE AND INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY, CHOOSING WORKS THAT EXPECT AND REWARD INTELLIGENCE, REVEL IN LANGUAGE, AND ARE LIFE-ENHANCING RATHER THAN CYNICAL. THE 2017-2018 SEASON HAS BEEN TRULY POWERFUL WITH LITERARY FAVORITES INCLUDING A MODERNIZED VERSION OF HAMLET. BOTH ADULT AND STUDENT AUDIENCES WERE INSPIRED BY PARK SQUARE THEATRE'S NEW PRODUCTION OF THIS CLASSIC PLAY. SET IN MODERN TIME, THE SCRIPT WAS CONDENCED AND MORE FOCUSED TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR STUDENTS TO ATTEND DURING THE DAY. THE PERFORMANCE FEATURED ACTORS OF COLOR, A LARGE RANGE OF AGES, AND TWO WOMAN PLAYING IN TRADITIONALLY MALE ROLES. ONE CRITIC CALLED IT "A FRESH, NEW PRODUCTION OF THIS TIMELESS WONDER" (HOW WAS THE SHOW?).THIS YEAR'S ARTISTIC HIGHLIGHTS ALSO INCLUDED TWO SHOWS PARK SQUARE THEATRE BROUGHT BACK FROM THE HUMANA FESTIVAL IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. THE PLAY DOT FEATURES AN AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMILY GRAPLING WITH THE CHANGES THAT COME WHEN THE MATRIARCH BEGINS EXHIBITING THE EARLY STAGES OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE. WHILE THE PLAY DEALT WITH DIFFICULT SUBJECT MATTERS, AUDIENCES TOOK WITH THEM THE TENDERNESS AND HUMOR THAT THE CAST WAS ABLE TO CAPTURE THROUGH THE PRODUCTION.THE OTHER PRODUCTION FROM THE HUMANA FESTIVAL IS CARDBOARD PIANO. SET IN WAR-TORN UGANADA, TWO YOUNG WOMAN (ONE AFRICAN AND ONE THE DAUGHTER OF A MISSIONARY) ARE MEETING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT FOR A SECRET WEDDING CEREMONY WHEN THEY ARE INTERRUPTED BY A CHILD SOLDIER. THE PLAY WRESTLES WITH THE CONCEPTS OF REDEMPTION AND HAS UNIVERSAL MESSAGING THAT OUR AUDIENCES ARE COMPLETELY MOVED BY. TALKING BROADWAY REPORTED THAT "PARK SQUARE IS TO BE COMMENDED FOR CONTINUING TO MOUNT NEW WORKS THAT ILLUMINATE THE INFINATE RANGE OF EXPERIENCES OF THE HUMAN HEART." THESE TWO PRODUCTIONS WERE ELEVATED BY THE NEW SHARING THE SQUARE INITIATIVE AT PARK SQUARE THEATRE. THIS INVOLVES WORKING WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS WHO CAN SHARE INSIGHT INTO THEIR AREAS OF EXPERTISE TO MAKE THE PRODUCTION MORE AUTHENTIC AND MEANINGFUL. COMMUNITY PARTNERS BRING IN EXPERTS TO REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES TO HELP CAST AND AUDIENCES LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CONTEXT OF THE PLAYS AS WELL AS THE WORK THE COMMUNITY PARTNERS ARE DOING. BY WORKING WITH EACH OTHER BOTH THE THEATRE AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS ARE EXPOSED TO NEW AUDIENCES. COMMUNITY PARTNERS THUS FAR HAVE INCLUDED THE ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION, THE HEALTH PARTNERS CENTER FOR MEMORY AND AGING, THE AMERICAN BRAIN FOUNDAITON, AND THE CENTER FOR VICTIMS OF TORTURE. DURING PARK SQUARE'S 2017-2018 SEASON, WE HAVE CONTINUED TO EXPAND ARTISTICALLY WITH OUR TWO STAGE SEASON, INCL |
