Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Duluth Area Family YMCA is dedicated to putting the principles of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Healthy living - the y is a leading voice on health and well-being. We bring families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. As a result, 6,565 people in our community are receiving the support, guidance, and resources they need to achieve greater health in sprit, mind, and body. This is particularly important as our nation struggles with an obesity crisis, families struggle with work/life balance, and individuals search for personal fulfillment. Our programs are accessible, affordable, and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities, and income levels. In 2011, we provided $382,077 in financial assistance to people who otherwise would have faced economic barriers to participation. The duluth area family ymca facility includes a 5 lane lap pool, wheelchair accessible warm water therapy pool, whirlpool, indoor run/walk track, fully equipped wellness center with cardio and weight training equipment, group exercise space, gymnasium with basketball and volleyball courts, racquetball and squash courts, and a supervised kids club free to those with family memberships.
Activity 3
Social responsibility - our ymca believes in giving back and supporting our neighbors. We have been listening and responding to our communitys most critical social needs for more than 130 years. Y programs, such as true north americorp (tnac) and the lake superior initiative are examples of how we deliver training, resources, and support that empower our neighbors to effect change, bridge gaps, and overcome obstacles. Since 2004, we have placed 700 americorp members throughout northeastern minnesota. Tnac partners with 70 nonprofits and community agencies in the arrowhead region, from brainerd to hinkley and duluth to grand marais and surrounding areas. Tnacs mission is to enhance the future success of at-risk children by increasing the number of positive adults in their lives. This is accomplice by placing a corps of well-trained members and volunteers within mentoring, tutoring, and after-school programs serving at-risk children grades k-8, and by mobilizing ymca members, participants, and volunteers in activities that support these programs and strengthen our community paving the way for future generations to thrive. For the past three years, the lake superior initiative worked to build the efficiency, effectiveness and capability of our regions community organizations. The initiative, a joint project of the duluth area family ymca and united way of greater duluth, oversaw two federal grants that provided community organizations with capacity building through trainings, technical assistance and financial awards. This region was one of just two communities nationwide to be awarded these two highly competitive federal grants from the compassion capital fund of the u.s. Department of health and human services: a communities empowering youth (cey) grant for youth-oriented organizations and a demonstration grant for community organizations.the goal of both the cey and demonstration grants was to build on the capacity of organizations so they, in turn, could better serve individuals in need. Both grants helped organizations in all stages, from the established organization that needed a new strategic plan to the mid-size organization that needed to incorporate technology for community outreach to the new organization that wanted to learn the process of filing for non-profit status. Organizations located in st. Louis, cook, lake and carlton counties in minnesota and douglas county in wisconsin were eligible for the programs benefits.the cey grant of $750,000 worked to build the capacity of 10 duluth area agencies that served youth at-risk of abuse, neglect, violence and involvement with gangs. The $1.5 million demonstration grant worked with approximately 20 different organizations 63 organizations total - that served individuals and families experiencing poverty, at-risk youth, people in transition from welfare to work, people facing addiction or incarceration and/or former prisoners re-entering the community and their children.
