IRS990/Desc0Permaculture:Our Permaculture programs provided 13,430 direct program service hours to a total of 281 students from around the world. Permaculture is a design science utilizing an innovative systems-approach to consciously design landscapes, human settlements and farming systems that are inspired by and integrate natural eco-systems. Permaculture engages the outputs of one system as the inputs for another and strongly emphasizes the mechanisms for feedback and progressively adaptive designs. Sustainability is defined in Permaculture as a system that produces and stores more energy than is required to maintain & replicate itself, notably banking with todays sunlight, not on fossil fuels. Quail springs two key Permaculture Design courses (PDC) emphasize hands-on projects including a practical design project that is site and context specific and integrates all of the different elements of a thorough permaculture design. These permaculture design courses are certified by the Permaculture Research Institute and are presented as a 72-hour curriculum taken from the permaculture designers manual authored by founder Bill Mollison. One of our PDCs is focused specifically on permaculture in the context of international development and draws students from around the world. Other programs, such as farm tours, introduce the concepts and practical uses for permaculture employed onsite at quail springs and applicable in urban areas. Internships immerse students for three to six months on the farm while steeped in community for applied immersion in social and ecological restoration. The socal permaculture course highlighted the people care aspect of permaculture, focusing on how to structure groups for maximum group health, how to share power fairly, improve communication skills, mediate conflicts and facilitate group processes.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Youth / customized programming:Quail springs hosted or held 13 different youth programs in 2016 for a total of 264 youth and 33 adults associated with the programs. There was a total of 7,839 program service hours provided by this sector. Our youth programs weave science, economics, nature awareness, and social justice into a holistic training program that empowers students to create meaningful change in the world. The synergy of practical and life skills equips students with the tools and wisdom to enhance personal, ecological and community health. The community tending & justice focus includes communication tools, conflict resolution and transformation skills, gift identification, racial justice exploration, ecological economics, environmental justice integration, spiritual connection, self-care and liberation ecology. We look at how we serve our own communities, find our right livelihoods, and respond to the heartbreaks of cultural disconnections and inequity. Young students gather tools that help them understand what each of us brings to the table, how to practice conscious ally-ship and action, tend our personal and cultural grief, and where we still need to grow our understanding. Our permaculture curriculum for youth builds on advanced systems of indigenous knowledge in how we can be tenders of place and our own cultures. Young students learn about ecological agriculture, water systems, appropriate technologies, designing beneficial relationships that mimic nature, food forests, seed saving, animal husbandry, and finding solutions that actively grow our hope. Quail springs emphasizes experiential and outdoor learning: through farm immersion and nature connection, students observe and practice all aspects of food production, from tending and gathering fodder for dairy goats and preparing milk for cheese, yogurt and buttermilk, to learning about life cycles, the food chain, and the importance of the millions of microorganisms that support healthy systems. Planting garden beds, harvesting fresh ingredients for meals or food preservation, or nourishing and building soil with compost, students gain a deep awareness and appreciation for all that goes into our food supply. In other service learning projects, students get their hands in the mud to build earthen benches or new animal structures.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Ecological and Cultural Restoration:Quail Springs served 109 people, a total of 5,600 direct program service hours in the fields of ecological & cultural restoration. These programs pay attention to the tending of culturally and ecologically important systems for site-specific agro-ecology and agroforestry. We are restoring the watershed upon which we sit, including the regeneration of the spring water, and expansion of the riparian habitat to attract wildlife and restore balance in the ecosystem. Cultural restoration includes in-depth education in earth-based skills, crafts and community. Our culture-making offerings include how we express stories, celebrate, and come together as community. We explore nature based-skills of tracking, wildcrafting, cooking, natural dyeing, herbalism, drawing, the way of council, music, song and natural building. Students get to know the wild plants, animals, birds, and landscape of the unique desert canyon through guided wanders with knowledgeable staff. We grow our connections to the land, other people, and ourselves as we practice telling our stories. Those stories, games, art and other activities are utilized to empower, inspire, challenge, and provide the opportunity to engage more deeply with themselves and the group. In tending the art forms that make us feel alive, we gain powerful voices for mediation, creative place-making, and growing human connection. Our teachers are artisans, naturalists, musicians, storytellers, villagers and stewards. We share the love of creating beauty through a reciprocal relationship with the natural world and combine hands-on experience with historical, ecological and cultural understanding. Our approach to restoration ecology embraces the natural world that reestablishes the relationship between culture and nature. Since quail springs beginning in 2004, this approach has been a foundation of all of our programs and our culture.
