The little forks conservancy permanently protects lands with natural and cultural resources that add to the quality of life in our community.

To permanently protect and improve natural environments in mid-michigan by leading and inspiring actions that conserve vital habitats and waterways for the benefit of our entire community.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

Any director, principal officer, staff member or member of a committee with governing board delegated powers is required to comply with the conflict of interest policy. Determination of a conflict of interest is done at the governing board or committee level with any interested person removed from the discussion. Conflict disclosure statements are filed at the beginning of each year in accordance with the duty to disclose portion of the conflict of interest policy. The conservancy has not had a conflict under its policy requiring any enforcement.

The organization uses compensation surveys or studies from comparable nonprofits (michigan nonprofit association salaries) for similarly qualified persons in functionally comparable positions at similarly situated organizations, the consumer price index, and review and approval by the executive committee and finance committee to establish the compensation of the organization's executive director as documented in the committee minutes. The full board votes on the total budget as documentd in the board minutes.

The conservancy includes the statement of activities in a summer newsletter, which is distributed to members and key community stakeholders. The newsletter is also published on their website. All other documents are available at the conservancy's office for public view if requested. The conservancy's form 990 is posted on guidestar.org for registered users.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

The conservancy works to perpetually conserve the natural resources of our region through fee simple acquisition or the establishment of conservation easements. The conservancy maintained trails on its six publicly accessible nature preserves. The conservanacy provided education to the general public regarding land conservation through direct mail, newletters, community meetings and events, social media and the website. The conservancy continued its outreach program called nature/nurture to engage with high school students in the area and continued to work on the conservation at home community program. The conservancy currently maintains 32 conservation easements covering over 2,927 acres. The conservancy owns six fee simple preserves totaling 849 acres open to the public for low impact recreational use.

The conservancy does not record a value in the statement of financial position for donated or purchased conservation easements since the easements do not provide the conservancy a possessory interest in the property and the conservancy can not sell or otherwise exchange the rights for compensation.
