“The citizens mediation service, inc. Provided low-cost / no cost mediation services in berrien, van buren, cass, branch, and st. Joseph counties in michigan. The agency conducted mediations in the following areas: court actions (district, civil, family, juvenile, probate); special education issues, civil rights complaints, business disputes, and property issues. A large proportion of clients had their mediation fees waived who fell below federal income guidelines. Trained volunteers and staff provided these mediation sessions at great savings in time and dollars to the court system and to families. During 2018, the organization had 581 mediation referrals from the five counties it serves in southwest michigan. Just over 90% of these referrals came from area courts, meaning our services reduced their court dockets by approximately 524 cases. Our center has income guidelines that roughly match the area's legal aid services. As a result, 10,775 in mediation case fees were waived for low and middle income residents of our district. We provided civil, divorce, parenting time, probate, special education, landlord/tenant and child protection mediation services during the year.”
