Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To conserve, protect, and restore north america's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Sustain:in 2013, tu expanded its headwaters youth program significantly, and added numerous college chapters throughout the country, giving tu the chance to intersect with students from grammar school through college.tu's volunteers logged 670,492 hours worth a contribution of $24.7 million to the organization. Tu recruited 2,500 new members and, across the country chapters and councils raised almost $10 million for work on the ground. Tu continued its effort to introduce women to fly fishing and the conservation work of the organization through the women in tu program, now in its second year. In 2013, tu saw a 25 percent increase in the numbers of women in the organization.tu's veterans services partnership saw a 35 percent growth in the number of veterans served in 2013; a 30 percent increase in the number of outings for veterans; a 30 percent increase in the number of chapters involved; a 32 percent increase in the number of tu volunteers; and a 24 percent increase in the number of tu volunteer hours.tu launched its new website in 2013, with the idea that it will be a work-in-progress over the next year or so. The new site allows users to upload and add content; interact with fellow members and other users; and access data on things like water flows, fishing reports, trip reports and the like.
Activity 3
Science:tu's science team continues to do groundbreaking work in the field of fisheries restoration. The team's work now influences most of the work undertaken by tu programs all across the country. The team is also on the cutting edge of applied research in fishery recovery projects. Additionally, tu received its first grant from nasa at the end of 2013.tu produced a limiting factor analysis tool - called mr fat - that provides the ability to measure the effectiveness of various meadow and riparian restoration projects on native fish limiting factors. Tu published articles on the genetic integrity of fish populations that are important to sport fishing, such as the south fork of the boise river in idaho, and developed a handbook on stream management for private landowners.tu applied its conservation portfolio planning process to rio grande cutthroat trout, yellowstone cutthroat trout, colorado river cutthroat trout, and bonneville cutthroat trout. Maps showing the results of our analysis may be found on the tu website (www.tu.org/csi).the csi was expanded to help identify salmon and steelhead strongholds on the pacific coast and native fish conservation areas in the colorado river basin and the atlantic coast. Csi analyses have been completed for winter and summer steelhead, coho salmon, chinook salmon, chum salmon and pink salmon on the west coast, as well as atlantic salmon on the east coast.

IRS990/Description0PROTECT:BRISTOL BAY IN ALASKA REMAINED TU'S LARGEST CONSERVATION PRIORITY IN 2013, AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY'S WATERSHED ASSESSMENT OF THE REGION REMAINED THE ORGANIZATION'S PRIMARY FOCUS IN THIS CAMPAIGN. AFTER SUBMITTING COMMENTS ON THE PREVIOUS DRAFT ASSESSMENT, TU AND ITS VOLUNTEERS CONTINUED TO OFFER INPUT ON THE ASSESSMENT IN 2013, AND THE ORGANIZATION'S STAFF WORKED WITH THE EPA AND MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO ENSURE THE VOICE OF ANGLERS WAS HEARD ON THIS ISSUE. AT STAKE IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST AND MOST ECONOMICALLY VIABLE (BOTH COMMERCIAL AND RECREATIONAL) SOCKEYE SALMON RUN, SHOULD THE PROPOSED PEBBLE MINE BE CONSTRUCTED IN THE WATERSHED'S HEADWATERS. IT'S LIKELY THAT THE STEADFAST OPPOSITION TO THIS PROJECT FROM TU AND OUR SPORTING VOLUNTEERS RESULTED IN THE PULLOUT OF THE PROPOSED MINE'S MAJOR PARTNER. IN THE BOOK CLIFFS REGION OF UTAH, TU WORKED WITH LAWMAKERS AND LOCAL SPORTSMEN TO PLAN RESPONSIBLE OIL AND GAS DRILLING IN THE AREA. TU WORKED WITH U.S. REPRESENTATIVE ROB BISHOP AND THE STATE'S REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR TO ENSURE THE BEST HABITAT IN THE REGION WAS PLACED IN A THREE-YEAR "TIME OUT" TO ALLOW THE LEGISLATIVE EFFORT TO PROTECT THIS AREA PLAY OUT. IN MAINE, TU AND ITS VOLUNTEER SAMPLED DOZENS OF UNNAMED PONDS IN THE NORTH WOODS BACKCOUNTRY FOR THE PRESENCE OF NATIVE BROOK TROUT, FINDING SOME PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN POPULATIONS AND SETTING THE STAGE FOR THEIR PERMANENT PROTECTION. IN COLORADO, TU LED ANGLERS AND HUNTERS IN AN EFFORT TO PROTECT THE BEST FISH AND GAME HABITAT ON THE THOMPSON DIVIDE FROM OIL AND GAS DRILLING AND DEVELOPMENT. MUCH OF THIS AREA IS VITAL TO NATIVE AND WILD TROUT, AND IRRESPONSIBLE DRILLING COULD SPELL DOOM FOR NATIVE COLORADO RIVER CUTTHROAT TROUT, AS WELL AS PRIZED HERDS OF MULE DEER AND ELK.IN THE MARCELLUS REGION OF PENNSYLVANIA, NEW YORK AND WEST VIRGINIA, TU CONTINUED TO ORGANIZE SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN TO PUSH FOR IMPORTANT REGULATIONS AND PERMITTING FOR NEW NATURAL GAS WELLS IN THE REGION; AND OUR TRAINED VOLUNTEERS CONTINUE TO MONITOR WATER QUALITY IN THE AREA TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS FROM OIL AND GAS DRILLING. IN WASHINGTON STATE, TU AND ITS ARMY OF ANGLERS AND HUNTERS HELPED PUSH THROUGH A NEW BILL REQUIRING OFF-ROAD VEHICLES (ORVS) TO BE REGISTERED WITH THE STATE AND THEIR OWNERS TO DISPLAY VISIBLE LICENSE PLATES ON THEIR ORVS SO THEY CAN BE RECOGNIZED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL IN THE STATE. THIS IS PART OF A NATIONWIDE EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE RESPONSIBLE ORV USE ON PUBLIC LANDS, WITH THE INTENT OF PROTECTING IRREPLACEABLE FISH AND GAME HABITAT, AS WELL AS SPORTING OPPORTUNITY.IN PENNSYLVANIA, TU AND ITS VOLUNTEERS HELPED IDENTIFY A NUMBER OF QUALITY TROUT STREAMS AROUND THE STATE THAT ARE DESERVING OF WILD TROUT MANAGEMENT, INCLUDING LITTLE POTTS RUN. PRESENTLY, VOLUNTEERS ARE FIGHTING AN INEFFECTIVE BILL THAT WOULD REMOVE THE POWER TO DESIGNATE RIVERS FOR WILD TROUT MANAGEMENT FROM STATE CONSERVATION OFFICIALS.TU ORGANIZED LOCAL ANGLERS AND HUNTERS IN NEW MEXICO AROUND THE NOTION THAT THE RIO GRANDE DEL NORTE DESERVED PERMANENT PROTECTION, BASED LARGELY ON ITS HUNTING AND FISHING ASSETS. IN 2013, THE RIO GRANDE DEL NORTE WAS DESIGNATED A NATIONAL MONUMENT. RECONNECTIN MAINE, TU JOINED ITS PARTNERS IN CONSERVATION AND REMOVED THE VEAZIE DAM ON THE PENOBSCOT RIVER, THE SECOND DAM REMOVED FROM THE RIVER IN THE LAST TWO YEARS. THE REMOVAL OF THE TWO DAMS AND THE RETROFITTING OF A THIRD IN 2014 WILL OPEN UP 1,000 RIVER MILES IN THE PENOBSCOT DRAINAGE FOR ATLANTIC SALMON, AS WELL AS STRIPED BASS, SHAD, HERRING AND OTHER OCEAN-GOING FISH. THIS RIVER REPRESENTS THE LAST, BEST CHANCE FOR ATLANTIC SALMON RECOVERY IN THE UNITED STATES.IN WYOMING, TU AND ITS VOLUNTEERS REMOVED THE GREYBULL DAM IN THE SHOSHONE RIVER DRAINAGE, PROVIDING FISH PASSAGE FOR NATIVE YELLOWSTONE CUTTHROAT TROUT THAT HAVE BEEN DENIED ACCESS TO THE DRAINAGE'S UPPER REACHES FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS. IN MASSACHUSETTS, TU AND ITS VOLUNTEERS HAVE IDENTIFIED 39 DIFFERENT STREAMS THAT STILL SUPPORT OCEAN-GOING BRO
