Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

The Form 990 was initially reviewed by the Executive Director. It was then reviewed and preliminarily approved by the Finance Committee. It was finally reviewed and approved by the full Board of Directors prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

In January of each year, officers, directors and key employees disclose any potential relationships that may cause a conflicts of interest. When an event occurs that may trigger a conflict, the potential conflict is investigated.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

Salary for the Executive Director was based on funds available for salaries from grants. The board of directors completed a compensation analysis in 2009-2010 and found the ED was being paid on the low end of comparable organizations. Employee salaries are based on a market analysis of salaries for employees with similar job titles and responsibilities, and on funds available. Salaries are documented in the letters of hire and raises are reviewed with the finance committee.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

Annual financial statements are posted on the organization's website with a link to Guidestar which posts the Organization's 990.

IRS990/Desc0Supportive Housing Outreach Program works with chronically homeless individuals who also have a substance abuse or mental health disorder. In September 2010, RSSI received notification that we are one of seven recipients in the USA to receive a five year services in supportive housing grant from SAMHSA. This award helps to provide housing and supportive services to an additional 150 individuals by year five of the grant. Additionally, RSSI received an award from the Chicago Alliance to End Homelessness that provides rental support for new clients. Our goal is to help the hardest to reach people get off the streets into a safe and supportive environment and provide these individuals with the comprehensive services we offer. This award does not replace who we currently serve and will continue to serve.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The Housing Stability Program serves homeless and disabled families and individuals, chronically homeless individuals and those at risk of becoming homeless throughout Chicago by helping them attain affordable permanent housing at one of the buildings we serve. We provide them with ongoing supportive case management services which are individualized to meet the needs of the specific individual or family and are focused attaining a greater level of autonomy. Ultimately the goal is to enable the family or person to have the skills necessary to no longer need services from RSSI.To qualify for this program the head of household must be homeless and have a disability. Qualifying disabilities include Mental Health, Physical, HIV/AIDS and/or a Substance Induced Disorder. The disability must be of a long-continued duration, impedes ones ability to live independently, and be of a nature that could be improved by more suitable housing, or be from AIDs or conditions arising from its etiological effects.RSSI's team of case managers provides services which are tailored to meet the needs of the individual or family. Intensity of services is initially very intense when a client enters the program and less so as time passes and the client increases autonomy. Collaboration with the client is key for the process of increasing their self-determination, and goals and services are agreed upon jointly so everyone has a role in the delivery of services.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Prevention-Renaissance works to avert homelessness among those in crisis. This is done primarily through our participation in the Emergency Fund which enables us to provide short-term assistance with financial hardships to any person in the community. Requests for assistance are generally processed at the beginning of each month and an individual may qualify for assistance no more than once per year.In addition to prevention funds, Renaissance also provides prevention housing to low-income seniors who are 55 or older, are living with a disability and are at risk for homelessness. Currently its senior housing program is based at RRG's Kilpatrick Renaissance location on Chicago's North West Side.
