Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the metropolitan tenants organization (mto) is to educate, organize and empower tenants to have a voice in the decisions that affect the availability and affordability of safe, decent and accessible housing.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Affordable housing preservation program (ahpp): through ahpp, the organization attempts to reverse deteriorating conditions of privately owned rental stock. Ahpp helps tenants to form tenants associations and provdies self-help tools to tenants that build the capacity of tenants and community leaders to initiate repairs and be proactive about housing conditions in their community. Through happ tenants associations were able to win over 2,000,000 in repairs, relocation assistance and other services. Ahpp encourages partnerships and collaboration, which is focused on grassroots community organizaing and connecting local building issues to a broader advocacy agenda. Happ provides community groups, education institutions, public and social service agencies with training in tenants' rights.
Activity 3
Healthy homes: it provides tenants, city agencies and community organizations with information regarding the intersection of health and housing. The program is designed to assist tenants whose health has been impacted by home based environmental hazards, and to preserve their housing and correct the health hazards intheir homes. The program provides written and verbal information as well as on site assistance to renters.
