Activity 2

Basic skills/education in illinois and iowa - services are directed to participants lacking basic education such as reading, writing and math. The upgrading of these skills leads to improved job opportunities. Approximately 1,336 clients participate in safer's education model which provides an active and inclusive environment where students are peer teachers and help each other develop skills needed to obtain a ged under the guidance of trained facilitators. Educational services are delivered in a simulated work environment incorporating time managment, team building, business setting interpersonal skills and conflict resolution at the conclusion of an intensive eight week session, students have the opportunity to take the ged exam. Safer is an official ged test site, allowing most students to take the exam at the same location where they attend classes.

Activity 3

Adult transition/residential programs - safer foundation is the only private agency that operates secured residential centers on behalf of the illinois department of corrections. At the two safer adult transition facilities, incarcerated individuals can serve the final 30 days to 24 months of their sentences in a community-based, work release setting. The purpose of these centers is to give the illinois department of corrections selected participants the opportunity to transition to work, families, and their neighborhoods prior to release in order to improve the likelihood that they will be successful and productive, law-abiding community members. Services offered include, but are not limited to substance abuse counseling, job-readiness training, and ged testing.adult transition/residential programs - continuedthis year safer housed over 1,528 clients at the two facilities and at any given time there were up to 584 residents. More than 300 residents participated in the literacy program and 277 residents enrolled in ged program. Of those, 88 residents obtained their ged. Employment is a major focus and 169 of the residents had job starts of at least 30 days. All received financial management skills and those working were required to save a portion of their wages. Atc residents exhibiting good behavior were allowed to visit their families and attend religious services, further increasing their chances for success upon release.
