Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The hertz foundation provides unique financial and fellowship support to the nation's most remarkable phd students in the physical, biological and engineering sciences. Our goal is to enhance the freedom and ability of these students to make important new innovations that strengthen the nation and improve the human condition. Offering a fellowship valued at up to $250,000 with five-year tenure, the foundation has supported some 1,169 fellows, two of whom have won nobel prizes and over 30 of whom are members of the national academy of sciences or the national academy of engineering. At present, half of the in-school fellows conduct research in the biosciences and 10% are in md/phd programs. In addition to academic support, the foundation offers, with support from alumni fellows and corporate sponsors, unique extra-academic retreats, symposia, workshops, and internship opportunities. Hertz fellowships are among the most prestigious in the world.

To identify, support and mentor the top us phd students in science, math and engineering

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation evaluates its uncertain tax positions and will recognize a loss contingency when it is probable that a liability has been incurred as of the date of the financial statements and the amount of the loss can be reasonable estimated. The amount recognized is subject to estimate and management judgment with respect to the likely outcome of each uncertain tax position. The amount that is ultimately sustained for an individual uncertain tax position for all uncertain tax positions in the aggregate could differ from the amount recognized. As of june 30, 2020 management did not identify any uncertain tax positions.

IRS990/Desc0FELLOWSHIP TUITION AND STIPEND. THE FOUNDATION'S LARGEST ANNUAL EXPENSE IS FELLOWS' TUITION AND STIPEND. IN FISCAL YEAR 2020, COMPENSATION PACKAGES TOTALED $1.8M FOR 72 STUDENTS, 37 PERCENT OF TOTAL EXPENSE. THE FOUNDATION'S GOAL IS TO RAISE ENOUGH SUPPORT TO FUND ALL WORTHY CANDIDATES EACH YEAR; HOWEVER, CURRENT RESOURCES ALLOW FOR ONLY ONE-THIRD OF ALL WORTHY CANDIDATES TO RECEIVE A FELLOWSHIP. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, THE HERTZ FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS AUTHORIZED A SIGNIFICANT BUDGET INCREASE TO BUILD A MORE AGGRESSIVE AND SUCCESSFUL NATIONAL FUNDRAISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS EFFORT. SOME DONORS RESTRICTED THEIR GIFTS TO SUPPORT BUILDING FUNDRAISING CAPACITY. TANGIBLE RESULTS CAME QUICKLY, WITH FISCAL YEARS 2016-2019 PRODUCING RECORD FUNDRAISING CASH RESULTSFROM $2.3M IN (CONTINUED AT SCHEDULE O) FISCAL YEAR 2016 TO $5.7M IN FISCAL YEAR 2019. MOREOVER, 28 PERCENT OF FELLOWS NOW MAKE ANNUAL GIFTS TO THE FOUNDATION, A LEVEL OF GRADUATE ALUMNI SUPPORT THAT FAR EXCEEDS MOST ELITE RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES. IN FISCAL YEAR 2016, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ESTABLISHED A GOAL OF WITHDRAWING 5 PERCENT OR LESS OF THE FOUNDATION'S CORPUS (INCLUDING INVESTMENT INCOME AND GAINS IN VALUE) BY FISCAL YEAR 2020; THIS GOAL WAS ACHIEVED TWO YEARS EARLY IN FISCAL YEAR 2018.
