Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

The most common way to become a member of alpha xi delta is to participate in the formal recruitment process at universities where an alpha xi delta chapter is located. Alpha xi delta is a member of the national panhellenic conference (npc) and recruits new members under their guidelines.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

Members of alpha xi delta elect the national council.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Each member of the audit committee will receive a copy of the 990. Each member of the audit committee and elysia balster gallivan, as national executive director, will review the 990. Once those individuals have approved, the 990 will be issued. The final version will be shared with the national council for awareness prior to issuance.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The forms are collected, kept on file, and individuals are asked to recuse themselves from a vote if it is a conflict of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The fraternity has an executive performance and compensation review committee comprised of three board members. Those members reach out to the foundation chair and nhc president for feedback. They review both industry standards for compensation as well as greek organization survey results. Location of the national executive director is also taken into consideration. The committee completes the review document and agrees on the compensation. National president completes the review and sends a memo to director of finance and operations for the fraternity for execution.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4B, Program Service Accomplishments

Chapter and membership support: the fraternity's staff and volunteers provide multiple avenues to enrich and support the sisterhood experience of every member. -alpha xi delta employed an educational leadership consultant to assist chapters of alpha xi delta with member development, officer transitions, recruitment planning, public relations, and other aspects of chapter operations. -there is dedicated staff and programming to help chapters recruit talented, bold women into our sisterhood. These efforts include chapter visits, virtually and in person, and the workout, a comprehensive recruitment training program attended by chapter membership vice presidents and other recruitment officers. -officer academy is a virtual officer training for new chapter officers. It featured one recorded session and one live virtual session for each newly elected executive committee officer and new member orientation director. This programming is designed to help members be successful in new roles, including encouraging collaboration with other sisters to ensure success. -alpha xi delta partnered with allone health to provide talk one-2-one, a confidential counseling service provider, for collegiate members to speak confidentially and free of charge. Alpha xi delta's collegiate members, advisors, fraternity volunteers and members' parents, can call the talk one-2-one 1-800 number, day or night, and speak to a professionally trained counselor to tackle problems through support, advocacy, and empowerment.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4C, Program Service Accomplishments

Leadership development programming: providing a quality membership experience requires countless programming opportunities to undergraduate and alumnae members alike. Alpha xi delta is proud to offer a range of programming to entice and educate women at all stages in their membership. -alpha xi delta employed a leadership coach to provide one-on one sessions to chapter members, helping them to leverage their personal strengths and realize their potential. Programming is primarily based on the principles of cliftonstrengths, an inter-nationally recognized talent assessment tool. -alpha xi delta partnered with mission partners and sarah e schoper to strategically develop justice, equity, diversity and inclusion awareness training and initiatives for our membership. This included visioneering sessions with fraternity leadership and developing a 5-part racial justice workshop program for our entire membership. -alpha xi delta has a dedicated new member program. It is a ten-week program for our newest members that is facilitated by initiated sisters. This program is designed to orient new members into the organization through a series of inter and intrapersonal opportunities, organizational history and expectations, and reflection on personal involvement. The program was developed to help chapters safely welcome new members into our sisterhood by clearly outlining expectations for both the chapter and the new member. -alpha xi delta has partnered with everfi to provide greeklifeedu to our undergraduate members. Greeklifeedu is a program created to help with harm education and harm reduction through the lens of personal and organizational values. It is an online program that addresses the critical issues of alcohol awareness, sexual assault, and hazing for incoming fraternity and sorority members. By leveraging trends and incorporating multiple evidence-based learning theories, greeklifeedu achieves behavior change objectives and helps members practice safer decision-making. Throughout this program, students are reminded of their values and strengths, and challenged to consider ways to leverage them throughout different interactive scenarios.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The note to the consolidated financial statements reads as follows: the fraternity and the nhc are each organized as not-for-profit corporations and have obtained exemption from income taxes under section 501(c)(7) of the internal revenue code and similar state laws. The exemption is on all income except unrelated business income. An unrelated trade or business of an exempt organization is any trade or business which is not substantially related to the exercise or performance of its exempt purpose. Income earned from non-members is recognized as unrelated business income to the extent such income is not set aside. Income that is properly set aside must be used for the qualifying purposes outlined in the set aside resolution. Neither the fraternity nor the nhc paid unrelated business income tax in the years ended may 31, 2021 and 2020. The activities of sjsu, cornell, wisconsin, unh, oshkosh, wv and texas are exempt as programs under the nhc's not-for-profit exemption and are included in the income tax filings of the nhc. The exemption is on all revenue except unrelated business income. Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america require management to evaluate tax positions taken by the organization and to recognize a tax liability if the organization has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by various federal and state taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the organization, and has concluded that as of may 31, 2021 and 2020, there are no uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability or disclosure in the accompanying consolidated financial statements. The organization is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. The fraternity and nhc have filed their federal and state income tax returns for periods through may 31, 2020. Income tax returns are generally open to examination by the relevant taxing authorities for a period of three years from the later of the date the return was filed or its due date (including approved extensions).
