Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

The most common way to become a member of alpha xi delta is to participate in the formal recruitment process at universities where an alpha xi delta chapter is located. Alpha xi delta is a member of the national panhellenic conference (npc) and recruits new members under their guidelines.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

Members of alpha xi delta elect the national council.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Each member of the audit committee will receive a copy of the 990. Each member of the audit committee and elysia balster gallivan, as national executive director, will review the 990. Once those individuals have approved, the 990 will be issued. The final version will be shared with the national council for awareness prior to issuance.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The forms are collected, kept on file, and individuals are asked to recuse themselves from a vote if it is a conflict of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The fraternity has an executive performance and compensation review committee comprised of three board members. Those members reach out to the foundation chair and nhc president for feedback. They review both industry standards for compensation as well as greek organization survey results. Location of the national executive director is also taken into consideration. The committee completes the review document and agrees on the compensation. National president completes the review and sends a memo to director of finance and operations for the fraternity for execution.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4B, Program Service Accomplishments

The fraternity's staff and volunteers provide multiple avenues to enrich and support the sisterhood experience of every member. - alpha xi delta employed three educational leadership consultants to assist chapters of alpha xi delta with member development, officer transitions, recruitment planning, public relations, and other aspects of chapter operations. - there is dedicated staff and programming to help chapters recruit talented, bold women into our sisterhood. These efforts include chapter visits, virtually and in person, and the workout, a comprehensive recruitment training program attended by chapter membership vice presidents and other recruitment officers. - officer academy is a virtual officer training for new chapter officers. It featured one recorded session and one live virtual session for each newly elected executive committee officer and new member orientation director. This program is designed to help members be successful in new roles, including encouraging collaboration with other sisters to ensure success. - the founder's academy (tfa) is an award-winning summer educational opportunity for chapter presidents and emerging leaders. Drawing on alpha xi delta's commitment to members' strengths, tfa focused on the development and application of cliftonstrengths principles enabling sisters to recognize their innate strengths while shedding light on areas where they can prioritize and take better care of themselves. This experience was held virtually july 21-23, 2022.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4C, Program Service Accomplishments

The fraternity uses multiple avenues to promote the accomplishments of our members and the organization. Alpha xi delta's magazine "the quill" allows us to promote the incredible accomplishments of our membersboth internally and externally. With a circulation of over 90,000, it is a source of pride for the organization. The mission of the quill of alpha xi delta is to inform, inspire and challenge. To sustain and nurture membership loyalty and interest. To recognize individual, group and fraternity accomplishments. To provide a forum for the exchange of information and opinions. To be the permanent record for the fraternity.

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C

The process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The fraternity is organized as a not-for-profit corporation and has obtained exemption from income taxes under section 501(c)(7) of the united states internal revenue code and similar state law. The exemption is on all income except unrelated business income. An unrelated trade or business of an exempt organization is any trade or business which is not substantially related to the exercise or performance of its exempt purpose. Income earned from non-members is recognized as unrelated business income to the extent such income is not set aside for charitable and educational purposes. Income that is properly set aside must be used for the qualifying purposes outlined in the set aside resolution. The outstanding balance of funds set aside as of may 31, 2024 and 2023 was $989,274 and $606,275, respectively. Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america require management to evaluate tax positions taken by the fraternity and to recognize a tax liability if the fraternity has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by various federal and state taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the fraternity, and has concluded that as of may 31, 2024 and 2023, there are no uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability or disclosure in the accompanying financial statements. The fraternity is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. The fraternity has filed its federal and state income tax returns for periods through may 31, 2023. Income tax returns are generally open to examination by the relevant taxing authorities for a period of three years from the later of the date the return was filed or its due date (including approved extensions).
