| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Live It Learn It partners with Title I (high-poverty) schools in Washington, DC to provide educational field tripsbookended by inquiry-based pre- and post-lessons designed to help students become more confident and motivated learners. We believe there is an experience gap, whereby students living in predominantly high-poverty neighborhoods do not have equal access to the enriching, out-of-classroom experiences enjoyed by their more affluent peers. We address this inequity by immersing students in onsite learning experiences that introduce them to new places, connect them to their communities, and make learning relevant. LILI served approximately 1,998 DC students during the past year. Since 2005, Live It Learn It has served over 27,000 3rd-5th grade students and teachers in Washington, DCs Title I schools by providing innovative experiential learning that connects students with local historical, cultural, and environmental sites. LILIs model centers on taking students on carefully planned field trips directly tied to classroom learning. Live It Learn It provides at least two units each year to every participating 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade classroom. At the beginning of the school year, each classroom teacher chooses the units from our menu of options that they believe best supports their classroom curriculum or otherwise is the most beneficial to their students. Each grade levels choices include units in the arts, humanities, and STEM. Every unit we offer is carefully crafted to be engaging, age-appropriate, and accessible to all students and is aligned with the DCPS curriculum. A LILI unit begins with students participating in a hands-on pre-lesson in the classroom that provides them with the needed vocabulary, context, and background knowledge to get the most of their field experience. This is followed by the field experience itself to a museum, monument, park or other cultural institution. Finally, within a day or two, is a classroom post-lesson during which students synthesize their newfound knowledge through discussion and hands-on activities. As a result of our units, students build schema (a critical component of literacy proficiency), gain confidence as learners, and develop a sense of belonging to the broader DC community. All units are led by our highly-trained experiential educators. Our methodology makes learning accessible to all students, regardless of prior knowledge, language ability, or reading comprehension skills. Our intervention is proven to impact students literacy proficiency and self-efficacy and exposes students to new places and content during a key phase of child development. Our approach also aligns with trauma-sensitive practices, which is a particularly important factor for the audiences we serve and for the times we find ourselves in.Approximately 94% of our students are Black and Brown. More than 60% of our students attend schools east of the Anacostia River. Our partner schools in Wards 1 and 4 serve large numbers of students (40-53% of school population) who are classified as English Language Learners. In Washington, DC, we are seen by schools and cultural institutions as the premier partner in experiential learning. Our model ensures we connect students with destinations in ways that maximize learning and inspire them to return; after the field experience with LILI, 91% of students want to go back and visit again soon, and 90% say that they would like to learn more about the subject they explored with Live It Learn It. |
