Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To excite young people in materials, science, and engineering careers. Created in 1952, for over 50 years the foundation has developed and operated innovative programs in education. Services to the public include, but are not limited to: undergraduate scholarships, leadership training grants, grants to enable k-12 teachers to bring materials into classrooms, grants to asm student chapters, annual recognition awards to high school teachers. The signature program is asm materials camp, this educational outreach program has served over 2,000 high school students, and almost 1,000 high school science teachers. Typically the program involves 40+ hours of lab-based hands on instruction, scheduled over 5 days. Both residential and non residential formats are offered. All programs are provided as a public service at no cost to the participant.

To provide for the advancement of scientific and engineering knowledge through education, leadership training grants, grants to enable k-12 teachers to bring materials into classrooms, grants to asm student chapters, and annual recognition awards to high school teachers. The foundation's employees are paid through asm international. The foundation reimburses asm international for all staff costs, including compensation, payroll taxes, and fringe benefits.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. The foundation evaluates at each statement of financial position date uncertain tax positions taken, if any, to determine the need to record liabilities for taxes, penalties, and interest. The foundation's policy is to record interest and penalties on uncertain tax provisions as income tax expense. As of december 31, 2021 and 2020, the foundation has no accrued taxes, interest, or penalties related to uncertain tax positions. The foundation has determined there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the financial statements.

Part V, Line 4

The endowment funds are used for educational programs and materials camps.
