| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Exhibitions - The museum promotes an awareness and interest in modern and contemporary art by displaying, for the benefit of the community, significant objects of high artistic merit. The past year's major exhibits included: Mark Mothersbaugh: Myopia which opened the previous year; Intersections: Artists Master Line and Space; and Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose. The Mark Mothersbaugh: Myopia exhibition opened in the Spring of 2016 and ran through August, 2016. This exhibition was done in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland. This exhibition is a career-spanning traveling retrospective of the art of Akron native and DEVO front man, Mark Mothersbaugh. The Akron Art Museum exhibition focused on his visual art practice and presented a unique combination of cultural criticism and personal expression through his drawings, paintings, sculpture and music. This installation included over 30,000 postcard-sized drawings that Mark Mothersbaugh created and drew upon for inspiration and exploration throughout his career. This exhibition also included installations of mirror-image photographs from the series "Beautiful Mutants" which Mark Mothersbaugh began in the early 1990s. Over 300 works in this series demonstrate that human beings are not as symmetrical as we like to think and that the real deviance lies in perfect symmetry. The Rubber Kustard, a unique artwork by Mark Mothersbaugh was made specifically for the Akron Art Museum.Intersections: Artists Master Line and Space showcases recent work by six sculptors for whom working on paper is also an essential part of their practice. Each of the artists' works in two and three dimensions relate in different ways, although all are distinguished by their mastery of both line and form. Artists included in this exhibition include Mark Fox who transforms his paintings and drawings into sculpture; Anne Lindberg whose installations are "built with color and air, filament by filament, through space; Nathalie Miebach who creates drawings in the form of musical scores from data generated by weather events which then turn inform colorful sculptures the artist weaves from wood, reed and yarn; John Newman who makes drawings before, during and after his sculptures, many of them as ways to understand how to realize new ideas; Judy Pfaff, a recognized pioneer of installation art, embraces a variety of materials and readily marries two- and three-dimensional elements in work distinguished by its dynamism and complexity; and the last artist, Ursula von Rydingsvard uses graphite, a traditional drawing material, to emphasize the surfaces of her sculptures in cedar and cedar as a medium to create alluring works of paper. Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose brings together works by 51 living artists. They come from around the world with different perspectives and approaches to art-making, and express distinctive voices and visions. Each has been featured in the popular art magazine Hi- Fructose, a San Francisco-based publication that covers and promotes artists and artworks within a recognizable but not easily defined aesthetic. Richly layered narrative imagery, renderings in vivid color or brooding gray tones, stylized figures and imagined creatures are just some of the recurring elements in the magazine and in this exhibition celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Turn the Page offers the opportunity to view these lush original works of art beyond the flat worlds of paper and digital screens, where they are most often seen. Though their subjects and styles are radically diverse, all the artists featured in Turn the Page demonstrate mastery of their chosen media. From oil paintings and drawings, to porcelain and bronze sculptures, video and mixed media artworks, both new and traditional artistic processes are represented. Other exhibitions continuing on view from the previous year include the following:Snack - artists featured in this exhibition, especially |
