Mission and Program Overview

Major Activities

Activity 2
Education/community outreach - the museum has an active and engaged education department that offers activities throughout the year for children, families, and fellow educators. Kids studio classes and teen studio classes encourage children and teens to join the museum's educators and explore artworks and ideas in the galleries and art-making in the classroom. Listed below are some of the offerings this past year:let's face ittall taleswhat's the weather todaycut, copy, pastewearable bookscold connectionscmykfamily drop-in days at the akron art museum bring families together with exciting activities that allow them to explore their creative side. Teachers gain a preview of upcoming exhibitions while learning how to collaborate with the museum to enhance their classroom curriculum. These workshops are free and usually feature a guest speaker as part of the event.this past year also represented the third year of the minimasters program, in which the museum collaborated with local schools to bring the grow up great initiative to the greater summit county community. This program's focus is to prepare preschool age children for success in school and life by providing arts experiences and explorations that foster important skills such as imagination, communication, self-expressions, critical thinking and visual literacy. The main components of the program consisted of 1) educator workshops which apply educational strategies and best practices used by museum educators in the preschool classroom, as well as increasing knowledge of art history, techniques, materials, styles and developmentally appropriate art curriculum, 2) classroom visits where museum educators visited preschool classrooms to present a series of three hands-on, interactive art experiences using curriculum based on the ohio department of education's early learning content standards and drawing inspiration from the museum's collection, and 3) minimasters family days allowing participating students and their families to participate in hands-on art activities, visit the museum galleries, experience musical performances and leave with a parent resource kit to aid in creating an artful, creative home environment. All activities and resources were free of charge and made possible through a generous grant from the pnc foundation. Attendance for the 2012-2013 school year was just under 1,000 at 997 attendees.another successful outreach endeavor, the draw me a story exhibition project, represented a collaboration with several local elementary schools to celebrate the power of picture book storytelling and promoting visual literacy with second and third grade students. The akron art museum's primary objective was to present the draw me a story project which takes the spirit of keats' book the snowy day and expands its multi-cultural themes for a new century. The project was directed at an urban neighborhood adjacent to downtown that has not previously been involved in the museum's school program. Originally, the museum hoped to collaborate with leggett elementary school but the project expanded beyond just one school. In early 2013, students from leggett elementary, king elementary, glover elementary and lippman school visited the akron art museum for narrative tours. They returned to their classroom and created collaborative picture book. As they worked, they corresponded with picture book author and illustrator duncan tonatiuh, who used their feedback to digitally create a mural inspired by ezra jack keats. Tonatiuh's large scale mural and the children's books were printed by the museum and installed in the corbin gallery. The resulting exhibition, draw me a sto
