“The board of trustees reviews the annual budget which includes compensation details for the director/ceo and museum staff. In addition, an annual performance evaluation of the director/ceo is conducted by the board of trustees led by the board president. The director/ceo's compensation is contingent upon the completion of this evaluation process. Three areas of strength within the collection are american painting and sculpture since 1960, twentieth century american and european photography and the edwin c. Shaw collection of american impressionists and tonalist paintings. Other works include textiles, painting and sculpture prior to 1960, nineteenth century photography and decorative arts. The museum maintains an overall collection management policy that is approved by the board of trustees. The collection management policy contains policies related to loans, accessioning, deaccessioning, rights and reproductions and safe art handling practices. The policy is administered by the curator and the executive director of the museum. The collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the museum's inception, are not recognized as assets on the statements of financial position. IN ADDITION, THIS PAST YEAR, THE MUSEUM COLLABORATED WITH THE TRANSFORMER STATION, A CLEVELAND ART GALLERY AND PROVIDED A TRAVELING EXHIBITION TITLED CHOICE WHICH CONSISTED OF CONTEMPORARY ARTWORK FROM THE AKRON ART MUSEUM'S COLLECTION.NEO GEO FEATURED THE WORK OF ERIK NEFF, GIANNA COMMITO, PAUL O'KEEFFE, KRISTINA PAABUS, AMY SINBONDIT, JANICE LESSMAN-MOSS, NATALIE LANESE, AND MICHELLE MURPHY. THESE ARTISTS USE A VARIETY OF PROCESSES, BOTH UNCONVENTIONAL AND TRADITIONAL IN THEIR EXPLORATION OF THE POTENTIAL OF GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION. THESE PROCESSES INCLUDED THE TRADITIONAL METHODS OF APPLYING PAINT TO CANVAS AND PANEL, FASTENING LAYERS OF TRANSLUCENT ACRYLIC PIECES TOGETHER USING A PLASTIC-MELTING SOLVENT, THE USE OF A DIGITAL DEVICE TO DRAW ON TOP MONOPRINTS, DIGITAL MODELING AND 3-D PRINTING WITH CLAY, INTRICATE TAPESTRY WORK WITH MULTI-COLORED THREADS, AND EYESHADOW PALETTES ARRANGED TO MIMIC OP ART. ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR ITEMS IN THIS EXHIBITION WAS THE INTERACTIVE SPACE CREATED BY NATALIE LANESE USING A DIGITAL TOOL ASSOCIATED WITH SOCIAL MEDIA TO DEVELOP THE DESIGN FOR HER INSTALLATION, DEPTHLESS WITHOUT YOU. NATALIE AND HER TEAM PAINTED CHEVRONS AND STRIPES DIRECTLY ON THE GALLERY FLOORS AND WALLS WHICH ALLOWED MUSEUM GUESTS TO EXPERIENCE HER ARTWORK FROM ALL ANGLES AS THEY WALKED THROUGH THE GALLERY. THIS EXHIBITION GENERATED ILLUSIONS THAT PLAYED WITH THE VIEWERS' PERCEPTIONS OF DIMENSION, ALTERNATELY EMPHASIZING AND DISGUISING LACK OF DEPTH. THIS EXHIBITION WAS SUPPORTED IN PART BY MRYNA BERZON, DIANNE AND HERBERT NEWMAN, KENNETH L. CALHOUN CHARITABLE TRUST AND HARRIS-STANTON GALLERY. ADDITIONAL MEDIA SPONSORSHIP WAS PROVIDED BY WKSU 89.7 AND WESTERN RESERVE PBS.
