“Visin y compromiso's mission is to promote community well being by supporting promotoras and community health workers as viable community assets and as agents critical to social change. Visin y compromiso is uniquely positioned to serve these active community members, educators, and liaisons by offering capacity building and research support to the network of promotoras and community health workers (p/chws) and their partner organizations.”

Together with our advocacy committee we organize an annual legislative day in california where representatives from the 13 regions meet and educate their legislators about issues specific to access to health, immigration and education. This forum provides promotores, legislators and their staff an opportunity to share information and identify ways they can work together in their local districts.”

“Training, workshops, informational forums, outreach and education - visin y compromiso has developed trainings and curricula for promotores, community organizations and public health institutions including hospitals, clinics and county health departments, in health related topics, advocacy, leadership and health education skills. The latina saludable, familia saludable curriculum is a 40-hour training for new and experienced promotores alike. It offers participants health education skills and a deeper understanding of the promotor model for community transformation through interactive sessions that increase awareness about community health issues, offers information about local resources, promotes discussion about health promotion and disease prevention, and provides a structure for building community. The mental health curriculum trains promotores on issues of general mental health as well as topics ranging from child abuse, domestic violence, substance abuse to communication skills, self esteem, amongst others. Training is also included for promotores with that will focus group facilitation skills as well as other tools and techniques that will aid in their development as community trainers and advocates. The advocacy and leadership curriculum encompasses 32 hours of training that offers participants the opportunity to explore their own leadership style and identify their role in advocacy for community issues. It provides information on the legislative process as well as the organizing and mobilizing of communities and provides skill building in these areas. Visin y compromiso is taking an active role to help californians through outreach and education activities, obtain information and resources they need to improve their physical, mental and financial health. Through partnerships with local hospitals, state programs and energy companies, vyc is making strides in ensuring californians have the tools they need to lead healthier lives. All projects integrate promotores and currently we are collaborating with agencies that focus on low cost energy programs, mental health, pre-diabetes prevention, obesity prevention, physical activity, the prevention of problem gambling, teen pregnancy prevention and access to health care coverage.”
