Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The museum collects works of art representing all periods of the american indian and western cultures. It preserves, collects and interprets this material through curatorial research and educational outreach. Collection items acquired either through purchase or donation are not capitalized. Contributions of collection items are not recognized in the statement of activities. The value of art objects acquired by gift, for which the museum has made a reasonable estimate, was $1,849,533 in 2013 and $545,820 in 2012. Standard museum procedures are used in accessioning, deaccessioning, cataloging and managing art objects. The museum provides a clean, safe and stable storage environment for its permanent collections. During 2013 there were a significant number of deaccessions, but there were not proceeds from sale. During 2012, ribbon cultural object, remington frederic sackrider painting and sculpture, and hopi katsina carving were deaccessioned from the collections for various reasons. The museum received proceeds from the sale of the remington frederic sackrider painting and sculpture and other items in the amount of $211,244 in 2012.

PART III, LINE 4:

The eiteljorg museum clearly focuses upon its mission. All works of art and objects in the collection are strictly relevant to the american west and native peoples of north america. All collection items are viewed as a resource in the fulfillment of the institutional mission and for the enlightenment and enjoyment of the public served by the museum. Paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, native american artifacts of all kinds, are all utilized or available for use in educational exhibits at the museum and through loan to other qualified museums. Objects are studied by students from grade school to graduate school and are therefore included through images and writing in class projects, articles, and books. Students, teachers, researchers, publishers, and others, along with the staff, are encouraged to utilize the collection through supervised examination and access to the collection database and digital images. Above all, native cultures, from which artifacts came, are given special access for cultural, spiritual, and educational reasons.

PART V, LINE 4:

The intended used of the museum's endowment funds are to support operations from now into the future. The museum has adopted investment and spending policies for endowment assets that attempt to provide a predictable stream of funding to programs supported by its endowment while seeking to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment assets. To satisfy its long-range-rate-of-return objectives, the museum relies on a total return strategy in which investment returns are achieved through both capital appreciation and current yield.

PART X, LINE 2:

The museum is exempt for federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Therefore, no provision or liability for income taxes has been included in the financial statements.
