Activity 2

Confidential client: ewi conducted a program for a confidential member aimed at developing an innovative system for high speed packaging of a consumer product. Ewi based the design of the new system on a fundamental expertise in high power ultrasonics. The project resulted in a demonstrating prototype packaging machine retrofitted with ewi technology and was subsequently tested in a production environment in the member's facility. The objectives of the program were to significantly reduce the use of packaging material while maintaining or improving the quality and shelf life of the product. Once full implementation of ewi's research results has been completed, the member expects to return significant annual cost savings from the material reduction and significantly reduce the waste packaging material that goes to public landfills.

Activity 3

The national shipbuilding research program-advanced shipbuilding enterprise (nsrp-ase): program designed to advance the body of knowledge and improve the quality of friction-stir welding processes as they relate to the domestic shipbuilding industry and to enable the widespread shipyard adoption of distortion control best practices specific to the fabrication and assembly of lightweight ship structures. The program teams included a broad range of participants, including shipbuilders, organizations that develop specifications, produce friction stir welded ship strutures, as well as leading engineering organizations and consultants. The program developed and demonstrated improved process knowledge that will support the ability to make defect-free friction stir welds on aluminum ship structures that require a minimal amount of inspection and developed specific recommendations for distortion control methods.
