Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is a not-for-profit organization that is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)3 of the internal revenue code and classified by the internal revenue service as other than a private foundation. In addition, the organization qualifies for the charitiable contribution deduction. The most significant tax positions of the organization are its assertion that it is exempt from income taxes and its determination of whether any amounts are subject to unrelated business tax (ubit). All significant tax positions have been considered by management. It has been determined that it is more likely than not that all tax positions would be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. The organization's tax years for 2010 through 2013 are open to examination by the internal revenue service.

IRS990/Desc0LITTER PREVENTION & COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION:KCB HAS AN ARSENAL OF LITTER PREVENTION PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES THAT UTILIZE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR AND BUILD A THRIVING CITY. WE ALSO HAVE AN ENTIRE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT REACHES OVER 20,000 YOUNG MINDS EACH YEAR ALLOWING US TO CULTIVATE A PASSION FOR KEEPING CINCINNATI CLEAN. BY IMPROVING OUR STREETS, PARKS, BUSINESS DISTRICTS, AND COMMUNITY GATEWAYS THROUGH CLEANUPS, EDUCATION, SURVEILLANCE, AND ENFORCEMENT, WE ARE CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE AND SENDING A MESSGE THAT IT IS NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE TO LITTER IN CINCINNATI.OUR HALLMARK PROGRAM THE GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP (GAC) NOW SPANS THE MONTHS OF MARCH THROUGH NOVEMBER, OFFERING ORGANIZERS MORE FLEXIBILTY AND GREATER ACCESS TO OUR TOOLS, RESOURCES, AND CORPORATE VOLUNTEER GROUPS. DURING THE PROGRAM YEAR, 188 CLEANUP EVENTS TOOK PLACE AROUND THE TRI-STATE WITH A TOTAL OF 7,807 VOLUNTEER PARTICIPANTS. THEY CONTRIBUTED 19,538 HOURS - COLLECTIVELY PICKING UP OVER 4,000 BAGS OF LITTER, CLEANING 66 ILLEGAL DUMPSITES, REMOVING 2,380 ILLEGALLY DUMPED TIRES, PAINTING 4 BLIGHTED BUILDINGS.WHILE COMMUNITY LEADERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ORGANIZING THE EVENTS, WE PROVIDE CLEANUP SUPPLIES, PROMOTE THE EVENTS ONLINE, ARRANGE TRASH REMOVAL, AND OFFER STRATEGIC RESOURCES DURING MONTHLY PLANNING MEETINGS. WE HAVE MANY GENEROUS SPONSORS, BOTH LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY (THROUGH KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL), THAT BELIEVE IN WHAT WE DO AND DONATE THE SUPPLIES WE NEED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: TRASH BAGS, DISPOSABLE GLOVES, FIRST AID KITS, T-SHIRTS, AND BOTTLED WATER. UNITED DIARY FARMERS IS A LONG STANDING TITLE SPONSOR OF THE GAC, AND THIS YEAR, WE WERE FORTUNATE TO HAVE A LARGE GRANT FROM THE OHIO EPA THAT PAID FOR ADDITIONAL CLEANUP SUPPLIES, T-SHIRTS, AND ADVERTISING. FURTHERMORE, WE HAVE AN INVALUABLE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF CINCINNATI'S DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SERVICES. THEY PROVIDED OVER 70 DUMPSTERS FOR OUR EVENTS (FREE OF CHARGE) AND COLLECTED ADDITIONAL TRASH, TIRES, AND YARD WASTE FROM WORKSITES WITHOUT ACCESS TO DUMPSTERS.IN ADDITION TO THE GAC, WE ORGANIZE TWO MAJOR CLEANUP EVENTS AS PART OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM (NEP). THE CITY OF CINCINNATI SELECTS TWO NEIGHBORHOODS EVERY YEAR TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NEP, ONE IN THE SPRING AND ONE IN THE FALL. EACH NEP LASTS 90 DAYS DURING WHICH KCB, CITY DEPARTMENTS, BUSINESSES, AND COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS JOIN FORCES TO TACKLE CRIME AND BLIGHT IN A TARGETED AREA OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. WE WORK DIRECTLY WITH THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL TO COORDINATE THE CLEANUP AND BEAUTIFICATION PROJECTS ON THEIR WISH LISTS. MOST OF OUR VOLUNTEER WORK FORCE FOR THESE EVENTS COMES FROM THE UNIVERISTY OF CINCINNATI. OVER 500 STUDENTS VOLUNTEERED FOR NEP PROJECTS THIS YEAR.IN APRIL 2014, WE IMPROVED THE ROUTES FOR THE ANNUAL CITY-WIDE LITTER INDEX BY WORKING WITH THE CITY'S HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SERVICES. WHILE LITTER HAD DECREASED AN AVERAGE OF 23% FROM 2008-2013, WE FELT THE EXISTING ROUTES WERE NOT PAINTING A REALISTIC PICTURE OF LITTER IN THE CITY. THE ROUTES, WHICH HAD BEEN SELECTED AT RANDOM, DID NOT ALWAYS INCLUDE MAJOR THOROUGHFARES AND/OR BUSINESS DISTRICTS. WE WANTED TO TARGET KNOWN PROBLEM AREAS AND HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS INSTEAD. SO WE COMPILED A LIST OF STREETS WITH CHRONIC NUISANCE COMPLAINTS, MIXED IN STREETS WITH BOTH RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL PROPERTY, AND MADE SURE A PORTION OF ALL MAJOR THOROUGHFARES WERE COVERED. WE COMPLETED THE INDEX OVER FOUR DAYS AND ESTABLISHED A NEW BASELINE SCORE OF 1.6 OUT OF 4. THE NEW DATA WE COLLECTED IS HELPING PUBLIC SERVICES ORGANIZE MORE STRATEGIC CLEANUP EFFORTS. DURING THE PROGRAM YEAR, WE WERE ALSO AWARDED FUNDING FROM THE OHIO EPA TO DEVELOP OUR ILLEGAL DUMPING ABATEMENT PROGRAM. WE WORKED WITH NINE NEIGHBORHOODS TO CLEAN UP THEIR ILLEGAL DUMPSITES DURING THE GAC. EACH NEIGHBORHOOD RECEIVED CLEANUP SUPPLIES, DUMPSTERS, AND BOBCATS (WHEN NECESSARY). WE COMPLETED A TOTAL OF 14 CLEANUPS WITH HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS A

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0BEAUTIFICATION & COMMUNITY GREENING:KEEP CINCINNATI BEAUTIFUL HAS BEEN A DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE MASSIVE CLEANING, GREENING, AND STABILIZING OF VACANT LOTS IN THE CITY OF CINCINNATI. SINCE 2010, WE HAVE STABILIZED 88 VACANT LOTS ACROSS THE CITY (TOTALING 726,000 SQUARE FEET) INCLUDING 12 LOTS IN THE LAST PROGRAM YEAR. WE SPREAD GRASS SEED, INSTALL A PICKET FENCE, AND PLANT TREES AT EACH SITE IN ORDER TO TRANSFORM OVERGROWN LOTS FULL OF NEEDLES, BROKEN GLASS, AND TRASH INTO VIABLE GREENSPACE OR SIDE YARDS FOR KIDS TO PLAY IN AND NEIGHBORHOODS TO ENJOY. OUR VACANT LOT PROGRAM RECEIVES FUNDING FROM COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANTS AND FIFTH THIRD BANK. THIS YEAR, WE ALSO PARTNERED WITH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ON A PROGRAM CALLED BRIGHT SITES THAT ADDRESSED VACANT LOTS RESULTING FROM WIDESPREAD DEMOLITION EFFORTS THROUGHOUT THE CITY. WE FOCUSED ON CLEANING KEY VACANT LOTS AND INCORPORATING LOW MAINTENANCE PLANTINGS. THROUGH BRIGHT SITES, WE WERE ABLE TO STABLIZE AN ADDITIONAL 53 LOTS DURING THE 2013-2014 PROGRAM YEAR.IN ORDER TO INSTALL AND MAINTAIN THESE LOTS, WE HAVE FORMED THREE KEY PARTNERSHIPS. BUILDING VALUE, AN EXTENSION OF EASTER SEALS TRISTATE, EMPOWERS INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AND DISADVANTAGES BY PROVIDING ON-THE-JOB TRAINING. BUILDING VALUE NOW TRAINS INDIVIDUALS FOR THE LANDSCAPE FIELD AS THEY WORK ON OUR VACANT LOTS TO CLEAN, PLANT GRASS AND TREES, AND INSTALL FENCING. ANOTHER PROGRAM OF EASTER SEALS TRISTATE, BUILDING ABILITY, SERVES FENCE PANELS FROM RECLAIMED LUMBER. LAWN LIFE, OUR MAINTENANCE PARTNER, HELPS US MOW, WEED, AND CARE FOR THE LOTS. LAWN LIFE IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES AT-RISK YOUTH WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO GAIN REAL WORK EXPERIENCE.VACANT LOTS IN CINCINNATI ARE EVERYWHERE, AND EACH ONE IS UNIQUE. TO GET A HANDLE ON HOW WE CAN USE THESE PARCELS TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, WE REACHED OUT TO UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI'S (UC) COLLEGE OF DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE, ART, AND PLANNING. OUR GOAL WAS TO GIVE CITY OFFICIALS AND NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATIONS THE TOOLS TO TURN THESE NEGATIVE LIABILITIES INTO POSITIVE COMMUNITY ASSETS. OUT OF THIS PARTNERSHIP CAME VACANT LOTS: OCCUPIED, A COMPREHENSIVE COMMUNITY-BASED WORKSHOP SERIES AND TOOLKIT DESIGNED TO HELP COMMUNITIES AND NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATIONS STRATEGICALLY RESTORE AND ENHANCE VACANT LOTS INTO SOCIALLY, CULTURALLY, AND ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE COMMUNITY ASSETS. WITH HELP FROM OUR PARTNERS INCLUDING UC'S HORTICULTURE PROGRAM, THE CITY'S COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT, AND BUILDING VALUE, WE PUBLISHED THE GUIDEBOOK AND BUILT A WEB-VERSION AT WWW.VACANTLOTSOCCUPIED.COM.IN ADDITION TO PAINTING ABANDONED BUILDINGS, OUR STAFF COMPLETED THREE NEW MURALS THIS YEAR. OUR MURALS RANGE FROM GEOMETRIC PATTERNS TO MORE DETAILED PAINTINGS OF NEIGHBORHOOD BUILDINGS AND SCHOOLS. THIS EVOLUTION HAS COME AS A RESULT OF OUR INVOLVEMENT WITH SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL (SRTS), A FEDERAL PROGRAM DESIGNED TO IMPROVE THE SAFETY OF CHILDREN WALKING OR BIKING TO SCHOOL. BY WORKING WITH SRTS, WE ARE ABLE TO REMOVE BLIGHT AND BEAUTIFY DESIGNATED ROUTES SO PARENTS FEEL COMFORTABLE HAVING THEIR CHILDREN WALK OR BIKE TO SCHOOL. OUR MURALS NOT ONLY IDENTIFY A SRTS PATH BUT THEY ALSO INCORPORATE THE COMMUNITY'S IDENTITY BY DRAWING ON THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH NEIGHBORHOOD. THIS BUILDS COMMUNITY PRIDE WHILE ALSO ACTING AS A DETERRENT TO GRAFFITI AND OTHER UNWANTED ACTIVITY.ANOTHER PROJECT OF FUTURE BLOOMS THAT IS GAINING POPULARITY AMONG OUR VOLUNTEERS IS FENCE WEAVING. USING RECLAIMED INDUSTRIAL VINYL, WE HAVE IMPROVED 30,000 SQUARE FEET OF CHAIN LINK FENCE ( A 114% INCREASE FROM LAST YEAR) BY WEAVING THE COLORFUL PIECES OF VINYL THROUGH THE FENCE IN AN EYE-CATCHING PATTERN. OUR VOLUNTEERS LOVE THE IMMEDIATE TRANSFORMATION THAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU TURN A RUSTY EYESORE INTO PUBLIC ART. OUR MOST NOTABLE FENCE WEAVING PROJECT TOOK PLACE ALONG CINCINNATI'S MILL CREEK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LOWE'S AND GROUNDWORK CINCINNATI - MILL CREEK. WE WEAVED BLUE AND GREEN VINYL ACROSS A
