Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To enrich the lives of special needs children and their families by presenting available resources to them, thereby allowing the family to focus on family, rather than the disability. We provide those with cognitive and/or physical disabilities the opportunity expand their independence and learn how to ski or snowboard.

PROGRAMMING The 2018-19 season proved again what a strong interest families with special needs members have for fun and safe recreational activities. We welcomed our largest group of participants to date, topping last year's numbers again. Programming days were at capacity and we still had individuals on our waiting list. Recognizing our growing demand and not wanting to turn individuals away, we began to explore ways that we could expand our programming options by adding the following: * We has started a new partnership with Wild Mountain in Taylors Falls, MN. We now can start providing adaptive ski & snowboard lessons in the north metro as well as the south metro. * Session Programs: We have 3 different days when we have programming for all of our participants. * Private Lessons: Providing individuals a chance to participate during times that were more convenient to them. Padraig's Place provided scholarships to families who took private lessons through the Buck Hill Ski School. * Donations: We assisted participants through donations of equipment, cold weather clothing, lift tickets and lessons. These are a few ways that enabled us to expand our reach in the disabled community. TWO | TRAINING AND SAFETY Training and safety are the top priority in our adaptive winter sports program. We have partnered with Beth Fox formerly with the NSCD. She is leader in the adaptive ski & snowboarding community. She is the one of the co-authors of the PSIA Adaptive Manual. With her new independent role we came together to sponsor the first Summit Adaptive Summer Camp for instructors from all over the world to come train together in Mt. Hood, OR this last summer. We had 25 participants attend the week long training camp. One goal of our partnership is to provide as much training to instructors & volunteers to enhance their skills to share with as many disabled skiers & riders as possible. This December for two days we will be have Beth Fox come back to MN to help us train over 99 volunteers & instructors for Buck Hill & Wild Mountain ski areas. Our partnership with Buck Hill & Wild Mtn. Ski and Snowboard School has continued to grow with closer alliance with the school, enhancing our instructor capabilities and encouraging development of adaptive skills of our volunteers and instructor staff. Both ski and snowboard schools provided several opportunities for volunteer instructors to train with their instructor pool. They have also made it possible for our instructors to join and complete the new instructor-training program for their paid instructors. We also trained alongside the Buck Hill & Wild Mtn. Ski Patrol to improve training and education among the first responders who work with the skiers and snowboarders of Buck Hill. Last year 2 ski patrollers volunteered with Padraig's Place giving us extra support if we need their help at any time. We are excited about our continued partnership and their commitment to the disabled community and partnering closer this year with the Professional Snow sports Instructors of America (PSIA) providing additional training clinics for our volunteer instructors. THREE | INDEPENDENCE Our founder's primary focus has always been creating independence and an opportunity for families to focus on family not the disability. This accomplishment alone exemplifies what we strive to do each time we are on the hill with our skiers and snowboarders. Last season we had the largest group of individuals graduate for the program as independent skiers & riders, who previously required assistance and training on the hill. In addition to this year we have 3 previous student's returning as ski buddy's to assist the instructor with the ski or snowboard lesson. This program has been one of the highlights of Padraig's Place. Ski Buddy's are usually children of volunteers or siblings of participants. Their mission is to be the student's buddy for the day. Everyone goes skiing with a friend, so we created that with the Ski Buddy program. FOUR | COMMUNITY Community partnerships have also marked success of our season. We offered tremendous learning opportunities for our core of volunteers with presenters from the local autism community who presented successful communication techniques and crisis management. We have grown our presence and support by providing a dedicated staff of adaptive instructors to support local schools that come to Buck Hill annually. This allows and welcomes any student from the school's special education program to be alongside his/her peers. This past year we worked with 20 different schools that brought students with physical or cognitive disabilities to ski with their classmates. Truly a wonderful day when their peers can see a student who uses a wheelchair on a daily basis use a sit ski for the first time and feel a part of the class. It's always so amazing to see how the stand up skiers cheer on their peers. This was our 10th year of involvement with a local children's hospital where we host a one-day event on hill. We have provided the majority of on-hill volunteers, equipment and instruction for their group that invites patients from their specialty hospital each year for a day of fun, sun and snow with their families. We look forward to another year of growth and furthering partnerships, existing and new, to continue to fulfill our mission. We are grateful for the support that our community has offered us to continue to support children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. We often marvel on how "able" these kids are to ski.$0$50,497
