Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To enrich the lives of special needs children and their families by presenting available resources to them, thereby allowing the family to focus on family, rather than the disability. We provide those with cognitive and/or physical disabilities the opportunity expand their independence and learn how to ski or snowboard.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The 2015-16 season proved again what a strong interest families with special needs members have for fun and safe recreational activities. We welcomed our largest group of participants to date. Programming days were at capacity and we still had individuals on our waiting list. Recognizing our growing demand and not wanting to turn individuals away, we began to explore ways that we could expand our programming options by adding the following: * Morning Program: Tailored to skiers that have stronger independent skiing skills but still require an instructor to teach and support them. * Private Lessons: Providing individuals a chance to participate during times that were more convenient to them. Padraig's Place provided scholarships to families who took private lessons through the Buck Hill Ski School. * Donations: We assisted participants through donations of equipment, cold weather clothing, lift tickets and lessons. These are a few ways that enabled us to expand our reach in the disabled community. Training and safety are the top priority in our adaptive winter sports program. At the completion of our on-hill season we sent three members of our adaptive instructor team to Mount Hood, OR to train with the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) of Winter Park, CO. These volunteers brought a wealth of education and experiences to share with the other in the program. The NSCD also returned to our home hill, Buck Hill of Burnsville, MN, to train with over 65 Padraig's Place volunteers. Our partnership with Buck Hill Ski and Snowboard School has continued to grow with closer alliance with the school, enhancing our instructor capabilities and encouraging development of adaptive skills of our volunteers and Buck Hill's instructor staff. The Buck Hill Ski and Snowboard School provided several opportunities for volunteer instructors to train with their instructor pool. They have also made it possible for our instructors to join and complete the new instructor-training program for their paid instructors. We also trained alongside the Buck Hill Ski Patrol to improve training and education among the first responders who work with the skiers and snowboarders of Buck Hill. We are excited about our continued partnership with Buck Hill and their commitment to the disabled community and partnering closer this year with the Professional Snowsports Instructors of America (PSIA) providing additional training clinics for our volunteer instructors. Our founder's primary focus has always been creating independence and an opportunity for families to focus on family not the disability. This accomplishment alone exemplifies what we strive to do each time we are on the hill with our skiers and snowboarders. We had several participants the last couple years become independent skiers, who previously required assistance and training on the hill. We had a participant come back to skiing after several years away from the sport due to physical issues. She was previously a three track skier (Standing) but do to her condition she is now a sit skier. We witnessed her spirit lift from just one hour of skiing with us and she returned three more times. Her mental health was greatly affected because she felt the freedom of skiing once again. Community partnerships have also marked success of our season. We offered tremendous learning opportunities for our core of volunteers with presenters from the local autism community who presented successful communication techniques and crisis management. We have grown our presence and support by providing a dedicated staff of adaptive instructors to support local schools that come to Buck Hill annually. This allows and welcomes any student from the school's special education program to be along side his/her peers. This past year we worked with 15 different schools that brought students with physical or cognitive disabilities to ski with their classmates. Truly a wonderful day when their peers can see a student who uses a wheelchair on a daily basis use a sit ski for the first time and feel a part of the class. It's always so amazing to see how the standup skiers cheer on their peers. We also hosted several special schools; one particular was Minnesota State Academy for the Blind & Deaf from Faribault. We used every skill set we had to ski with 12 Students and 10 teachers. That day was one of our major highlights of this past season for all the volunteers & instructors involved. This was our 8th year of involvement with a local children's hospital where we host a one-day event on hill. We have provided the majority of on-hill volunteers, equipment and instruction for their group that invites patients from their specialty hospital each year for a day of fun, sun and snow with their families. We look forward to another year of growth and furthering partnerships, existing and new, to continue to fulfill our mission. We are grateful for the support that our community has offered us to continue to support children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. We often marvel on how "able" these kids are to ski. WOUNDED WARRIOR OPPORTUNITES We are always looking to expand our reach within the disabled community we are developing a program for the local wounded warriors & veterans. With so many of our veterans coming home from overseas we have heard from the National Sport Center for the Disabled (NSCD), Winter Park, CO. that getting battle injured veterans to participate in an outdoor activity like skiing or snowboarding can help them on many levels, physically, mentally & emotionally. Our goal for this upcoming year is to coordinate with Buck Hill on their Military & Veteran Appreciation Days. We are going to reach out to VA, local organizations & wounded warrior project to let them know of our program enabling them to snowsports like they may have in the past or learn a new sport. Several of our supports, donors and volunteers are veterans; they too are very excited about this next chapter in Padraig's Place$0$40,394
SpecialKidCare.org is a website where we enable community organizations to promote the activities and services that they provide to the special needs community. This is a platform where organizations can independently manage their information and update the information as needed. We have developed a site where care providers pca's and respite care providers can promote their skill set to families who are looking for in-home care help. Families can create and manage profiles that identify the needs that exist in their home and with their special needs children. This year marked a year to evaluate the website and the ease of use for our families that continue to look for in-home support and community resources. Feedback from our community continues to remind us of how important it is to have a usable site to access information and to find quality support to fulfill the need for personal care support in the home. An area where we strive to enhance, we spent our year talking with families about their needs, how best to meet these needs and will work to enhance our site in the coming year with an improved interface and easier functionality.$0$2,469
