“Program Service Expenses 42,798, Grants and allocations 0, Revenue 34,362 Policy Advocacy SDHC represents the voice of the nearly half a million San Diegans with limited access to healthy, affordable food by sharing their experiences with key decision makers and advocating for improvements to anti-hunger programs and policies. With our finger on the pulse of hunger issues affecting the San Diego region, SDHC is a resource for county, state, and federal policymakers, providing research summaries, issue briefs, and case studies of whats happening on the ground in San Diego to inform policy decisions. At the federal level, we are participating in campaigns to engage legislators in protecting funding for school meals and other child nutrition programs in the Child Nutrition Act. We wrote 22 letters of support for state anti-hunger legislation participated and promoted 14 sign on letters to end hunger and poverty and participated in 15 visits to members of the state legislature and congress.”

“The San Diego Hunger Coalitions SDHC mission is to work to end hunger in San Diego County by ensuring effective implementation and maximum utilization of federal nutrition assistance programs. SDHC advocates for strong policies and strenghtens the ability of community-based organizations to connect families to the resources they need. SDHC accomplishes its mission through the following programs which are described in more detail on Form 990, Page 2, Section III, Lines 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d. Lines 4a 4b - SDHC helps families purchase healthy food. Line 4c - SDHC prepares schools to offer meals that enrich childrens development. Line 4d - SDHC advocates for policies to end poverty and hunger.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | CalFresh In 2014, only 64 of eligible families were receiving CalFresh benefits. SDHC plays a vital role in increasing participation by providing training and technical assistance for nonprofits and county agencies that enroll residents in CalFresh. In 2014, we trained 129 people on CalFresh outreach and application assistance. We fielded approximately 600 community requests for assistance. SDHC also runs the CalFresh Task Force, with more than 60 member agencies countywide and 4 regional meetings each month. We released a report on best practice methods for dual enrollment of clients in Medi-Cal and CalFresh and also worked with UCSD School of Medicine to develop a curriculum for healthcare providers on the connection between food security and health and a process for food insecure clinic and hospital patients to be referrred for CalFresh and emergency food assistance. Partners include Sharp Grossmont Hospital, County Public Health Clinics, Feeding America, and. San Diego Food Bank. The total number of households receiving CalFresh benefits increased by nearly 9,000 in 2014. |

In contrast, adequate nutrition has been linked to better attendance, improved grades and higher graduation rates, which are all directly linked to a childs future success. In 2014, SDHC released the final version of its research report on summer meals, Help Them Eat at Home, which examines reasons for chronically low participation rates in federal summer meals program and explores proven best practice solutions to reducing child hunger during the summer, such as providing low-income parents with a three-month food stipend on an EBT card. SDHC made presentations across the nation on the benefits of the Summer EBT option, and worked closely with the office of U.S. Representative CA Susan Davis and other California advocacy groups on the release of a Summer EBT bill for the Child Nutrition Act Reauthorization of 2015. |
