Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

A copy of the 990 is reviewed by the finance director, audit committee and the full board of directors prior to filing.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

The policy of the organization is that directors and management disclose any actual or possible conflict of interest relationship or transaction to the board of directors. The board then determines whether a conflict of interest does in fact exist, and if a conflict of interest does exist, whether the board will permit the director or manager to participate in the relationship or conflict of interest transaction. The organization is in the process of revising its formal conflict of interest policy.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

In setting compensation for management, the human resources committee compares compensation levels with positions having similar responsibilities at other not-for-profit organizations. The human resources committee makes recommendations for compensation that are included in the budget, which is reviewed by the finance committee and approved by the full board of directors.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The new england science & sailing foundation (ness) has a unique educational model that uses the ocean to create a love of learning and empower students to achieve success in life. Ness realizes those goals by using marine sciences and sailing as platforms to develop positive learning mindsets, increasing students' classroom and home achievement on and off the water. Ness's in-person experiential learning programs, accredited by the new england association of schools and colleges, are designed to deliberately build students' social and emotional learning (sel) and promote the growth of learning mindsets. That intentionality results in programs that increase students' confidence, perseverance, self-control, teamwork, and leadership skills, while also building connections between students, their communities, and a sustainable natural environment. Various studies have found that learning mindsets are as, if not more important, than socioeconomic background or the school's performance level to achieve academic success. We know from research that those embedded sel elements are factors in ness students' personal growth. A 2019 study, conducted by goodman research group, found that (among other similar findings) 96% of students sampled believed that they could do better in school, 93% felt more a part of their class, and 89% described themselves as more interested in what they study in science. The study also suggests that there is ample evidence that sel factors directly correlate to academic achievement. Ness's online experiential learning courses continue to build on those findings in order to promote impressive outcomes: -more students reaching for their full academic potentials. -increased numbers of students with growth in self-confidence, perseverance, self-control, communication, teamwork, and academic mindset. -students understanding their connections to the environment. -elementary through high school students who believe they can succeed in the world. Additionally, when coupled with ness's in-person programming, ness has a profound impact on students' lives-increasing their love of learning, unlocking their potentials, and equipping them with tools for success in life. In fact, research shows that students who participate in ness's school programs are eight times more likely to show gains in confidence, five times more likely to show gains in perseverance, four times more likely to show gains in teamwork, and demonstrate notably better self- control than other students. Ness is truly a stem education innovation leader, poised to expand on its organization reputation as a leading entrepreneurial education partner.

IRS990/Desc0NESS'S SCHOOL PROGRAMS SERVE STUDENTS K-12 THROUGH "PARTNERSHIPS" WITH SCHOOL SYSTEMS AND ORGANIZATIONS. PROGRAMS RANGE FROM ONE-DAY FIELD TRIPS OF 5 HOURS AT NESS IN STONINGTON, CT TO MULTIPLE EXPERIENCES IN THE CLASSROOM AND AT OTHER FIELD SITE LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR FOR 25-30 HOURS PER STUDENT. IN ALL DISTRICTS, NESS EDUCATORS WORK WITH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS TO MAXIMIZE THE EDUCATION EXPERIENCE FOR EACH GROUP, WHETHER IT BE IN THE FIELD OR THE CLASSROOM. THESE PROGRAMS ARE ALIGNED WITH NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS (NGSS) AND OCEAN LITERACY PRINCIPLES. PROGRAMS ALSO INTENTIONALLY TEACH FIVE SOCIO-EMOTIONAL FACTORS (COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK, SELF-CONTROL, PERSEVERANCE, AND CONFIDENCE) THAT ARE VITAL SKILLS FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE.

IRS990/MissionDesc0THE NEW ENGLAND SCIENCE & SAILING FOUNDATION (NESS) HAS A UNIQUE EDUCATIONAL MODEL THAT USES THE OCEAN TO CREATE A LOVE OF LEARNING AND EMPOWER STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS IN LIFE. VARIOUS STUDIES HAVE FOUND THAT LEARNING MINDSETS ARE AS, IF NOT MORE IMPORTANT, THAN SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUND OR THE SCHOOL'S PERFORMANCE LEVE
