Mission

The mission of native conservancy is to support indigenous people's efforts to preserve, repatriate and restore ancestral lands through the establishment of indigenous land conservation trusts on scarred lands and waters that are inherent to the protection and preservation of sovereignty, subsistence, spirituality and native culture.

Our vision is to create resilient futures for indigenous peoples by preserving, repatriating and restoring ancestral homelands, traditional food sources and subsistence practices to revitalize native culture, habitat, health and spirituality.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

Form 990 is prepared by an outside tax professional. The form is then reviewed by the organization's management and all members of the board of directors. This group of individuals then discusses the contents of the return with the outside tax professional. After a full review, the final version of the tax return is provided to all members of the organization's voting body. A representative of management authorizes the final form 990 which is then e-filed with the internal revenue service.

Members of the board of directors review all potential conflicts of interest at least annually. The executive director and all board members are required to disclose (in writing) potential conflicts and any related party affiliations. Loans between the organization and members of management and the board are strictly prohibited. The organization seeks full transparency on all relationships. Any potential conflicts (in fact or appearance) are discussed openly and resolved in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures.

The mission of native conservancy is to support indigenous people's efforts to preserve, repatriate and restore ancestral lands through the establishment of indigenous land conservation trusts on scarred lands and waters that are inherent to the protection and preservation of sovereignty, subsistence, spirituality and native culture.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Native land conservation: eyak cultural mapping started from a community vision to bring the traditional eyak names, associated stories, historic knowledge and language connections back to life through counter-mapping. Counter-mapping challenges widely accepted colonial perspectives of land and waters. This program provides recognition and cultivates deeper understandings of the eyak homelands, the value of names, stories and sacred sites. The bering river coal acquisition is a 23-year conservation campaign to stop roads and protect three-million acres of wild salmon habitat on the copper river delta. The bering river coalfields are 73,000 acres of pristine wilderness along the eastern perimeter of the copper river delta's alluvial fan that is a corridor for continuous wildlife. The watershed is fully intact and supports the returns of thousands of spawning coho and sockeye salmon each year. The goal is to protect and secure the coal title for the remaining 11,000 acres of the bering river coalfields.

The organization applies the provisions of topic 740 of the fasb asc related to accounting for uncertainty in income taxes. The organization annually makes a comprehensive review of its portfolio of uncertain tax positions in accordance with recognition standards established by asc 740. The organization recognizes tax liabilities for uncertain tax positions when it is more likely than not that a tax position will not be sustained upon examination and settlement with various taxing authorities. Liabilities for uncertain tax positions are measured based upon the largest amount of benefit that is greater than 50% likely of being realized upon settlement. The guidance on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes also addresses de-recognition, classification, interest and penalties on income taxes, and accounting in interim periods. Management has evaluated the organization's tax positions and has concluded that the organization has taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the financial statements to comply with the provisions of this guidance.

COUNTER-MAPPING CHALLENGES WIDELY ACCEPTED COLONIAL PERSPECTIVES OF LAND AND WATERS. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES RECOGNITION AND CULTIVATES DEEPER UNDERSTANDINGS OF THE EYAK HOMELANDS, THE VALUE OF NAMES, STORIES AND SACRED SITES. THE BERING RIVER COAL ACQUISITION IS A 23-YEAR CONSERVATION CAMPAIGN TO STOP ROADS AND PROTECT THREE-MILLION ACRES OF WILD SALMON HABITAT ON THE COPPER RIVER DELTA. THE BERING RIVER COALFIELDS ARE 73,000 ACRES OF PRISTINE WILDERNESS ALONG THE EASTERN PERIMETER OF THE COPPER RIVER DELTA'S ALLUVIAL FAN THAT IS A CORRIDOR FOR CONTINUOUS WILDLIFE. THE WATERSHED IS FULLY INTACT AND SUPPORTS THE RETURNS OF THOUSANDS OF SPAWNING COHO AND SOCKEYE SALMON EACH YEAR. THE GOAL IS TO PROTECT AND SECURE THE COAL TITLE FOR THE REMAINING 11,000 ACRES OF THE BERING RIVER COALFIELDS.

THE ELDER'S ABILITY TO ACCESS WILD FOODS WAS LIMITED EVEN PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC. THE GOAL IS TO NURTURE AND GROW THIS PROGRAM FOR LONGEVITY. LOCAL HARVESTED FOOD IS DONATED TO APPROXIMATELY 100 LOCAL NATIVE ELDERS.

THE BERING RIVER COAL ACQUISITION IS A 23-YEAR CONSERVATION CAMPAIGN TO STOP ROADS AND PROTECT THREE-MILLION ACRES OF WILD SALMON HABITAT ON THE COPPER RIVER DELTA. THE BERING RIVER COALFIELDS ARE 73,000 ACRES OF PRISTINE WILDERNESS ALONG THE EASTERN PERIMETER OF THE COPPER RIVER DELTA'S ALLUVIAL FAN THAT IS A CORRIDOR FOR CONTINUOUS WILDLIFE. THE WATERSHED IS FULLY INTACT AND SUPPORTS THE RETURNS OF THOUSANDS OF SPAWNING COHO AND SOCKEYE SALMON EACH YEAR. THE GOAL IS TO PROTECT AND SECURE THE COAL TITLE FOR THE REMAINING 11,000 ACRES OF THE BERING RIVER COALFIELDS.
