IRS990/Desc0PANY HAS THRIVED AS AN ORGANIZATION DURING THE EXTRAORDINARY CHALLENGES POSED BY THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC AND HAS SUSTAINED PAINFUL LOSSES OF SENIOR AND REVERED FACULTY OVER THE PAST YEAR. SMALL WORKING GROUPS WORKED ON PUTTING TOGETHER MEMORIAL EVENTS FOR FACULTY WHO HAVE PASSED.THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE, CHAIRED BY ART LEW, FINISHED ITS WORK AND PROPOSE A NOMINEE FOR THE NEXT DIRECTOR, AND HERBERT STEIN WAS ELECTED DIRECTOR, TO START TERM SEPTEMBER 2021, WITH CURRENT DIRECTOR DAVID FRANK SERVING AS INTERIM DIRECTOR DURING THE TRANSITION.PANY HAD ROBUST CLASSES ACROSS PROGRAMS FOR 2020-21 INCLUDING THE ADULT PSYCHOANALYTIC, DYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY, AND FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS. FOR THE 2020-21 ACADEMIC YEAR ALL CLASS YEARS WILL BE REPRESENTED EXCEPT FOR THE THIRD YEAR CLASS. (7 FIRST YEAR (+ 1 DEFERRED) CANDIDATES; 7 SECOND YEAR; 5 FOURTH YEAR; 9 SENIORS; 1 ON LEAVE). THE PSYCHOTHERAPY PROGRAM HAD A RECORD 37 APPLICANTS FOR SPACES IN THE PROGRAM.TWO RECENT PANY GRADUATES HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY THE EC TO JOIN THE FACULTY: TRACIE LUTHER AND ANGELA RETANO. IN ADDITION, TWO MEMBERS OF THE PHILADELPHIA STUDY GROUP JOINED PANY OVER THE PAST YEAR: THE EC APPROVED SALLY HOLTZ, MD AS A PHILADELPHIA FACULTY MEMBER AND LAUREN KATZ, MD AS A PHILADELPHIA AFFILIATE MEMBER.IN ADDITION TO GROWTH IN THE CANDIDATE POOL, CLINIC APPLICATIONS HAVE ALSO INCREASED FROM 92 IN 2017 TO, TO 122 IN 2018 AND 179 IN 2019. THE TOTALS AND TRENDS IN 2020 WILL CHANGE DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, WITH THE TOTAL TO DATE OF 76 FOR JANUARY THROUGH AUGUST 31.OTHER DEVELOPMENTS:THE LENGTHY AND ARDUOUS WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS IS NOW IN ITS FINAL STAGES, WITH THE PRIVATE FACULTY REFERRAL SERVICE AS THE LATEST COMPONENT THAT WE HAVE ADDED.THE EC IS IN THE FINAL PHASE OF APPROVING A NEW POSITION, CHAIR OF EDUCATIONAL SUPERVISION, WHO WILL WORK TO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR FACULTY TO DISCUSS ISSUES THAT WE ALL FACE AS SUPERVISORS OF CANDIDATES. WE ARE ALSO IN THE PROCESS, BASED ON OUR LEGAL COUNSEL'S INPUT, OF CHANGING THE TERM "SUPERVISION" TO "EDUCATIONAL SUPERVISION" IN THE CANDIDATE MANUAL (OTHER THAN FOR OUR LICENSE QUALIFYING PROGRAM, THE "LP PROGRAM," FOR WHICH FACULTY SUPERVISION IS STRICTLY SPEAKING SUPERVISION, SINCE LP PATIENTS ARE LEGALLY PANY'S PATIENTS AND NOT THE INDIVIDUAL LP CANDIDATE'S PATIENTS), TO MORE PRECISELY DESCRIBE SUPERVISORY ACTIVITIES.THE EC HAS APPROVED ADDITIONS TO THE COMPETENCY CRITERIA WHICH SUPERVISORS AND THE SPC USE IN EVALUATING PSYCHOANALYTIC CANDIDATES' PROGRESS IN THEIR CLINICAL WORK. CLINICAL PSYCHOANALYTIC SKILLS IN REFERENCE TO THINKING ABOUT GENDER AND SEXUALITY AND RACE AND ETHNICITY ARE NOW IN THE CANDIDATE MANUAL.IN THE CONTEXT OF THE PANDEMIC AND AN UNPRECEDENTED NEED FOR FACULTY AND CANDIDATE INTERACTION, A LISTSERV WAS LAUNCHED IN 2020 AND HAS BEEN A USEFUL FORUM, PARTICULARLY WITH REGARD TO SHARING PRACTICAL INFORMATION, CELEBRATING FACULTY AND CANDIDATE ACCOMPLISHMENTS, RESPONDING TO THE PANDEMIC, AND HELPING OUR COMMUNITY TO GRIEVE THE LOSSES MENTIONED ABOVE.THE PANDEMIC HAS FUNDAMENTALLY ALTERED THE CLINICAL AND EDUCATIONAL LANDSCAPE WHEN IT COMES TO VIRTUAL FORMATS. THE NUMEROUS FACULTY, FACULTY-CANDIDATE, AND CANDIDATE MEETINGS OCCURRING OVER ZOOM HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL WHETHER FOR FORMAL STRUCTURED MEETINGS AND CLASSES OR FOR THE MORE INFORMAL DISCUSSIONS THAT WE HAD ABOUT THE PANDEMIC AND ABOUT SOCIAL INJUSTICE. COMMITTEE AND OTHER ADMINISTRATIVE MEETINGS AND GRADUATE SOCIETY SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS HAVE OFTEN ACHIEVED RECORD ATTENDANCE. EDUCATIONAL SUPERVISION HAS BEEN EFFECTIVE. DESPITE PITFALLS FOR CERTAIN ACTIVITIES, THE VIRTUAL PLATFORM AS A REGULAR PART OF PANY ACTIVITIES IS HERE TO STAY, AND EVEN AFTER THE PANDEMIC IS OVER, THERE IS GOOD REASON TO CONTINUE AT LEAST SOME SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS VIRTUALLY.ON-LINE LEARNING AND PROFIT SHARING: PANY VIRTUAL LEARNING PROGRAM WILL INCLUDE COURSES (NOT ONE-TIME SEMINARS) THAT ARE OFFERED TO THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE (ADMISSION TO THE COURSE BEING SUBJECT TO THE INSTRUCTOR'S DISCRETION).
